Hey! How are you, what’s good and bad in your world?

Ryan: All good with us. Just back from ADE, feeling inspired and looking forward to the winter months as we move into club season.

Paulo: What’s bad? Not too much in our personal lives, we’re just a little tired and have been catching up on some sleep following a crazy week in Amsterdam !

How did you first meet and why work together?

Paulo: We first met each other probably about 10 years ago. Ryan was a friend of my brothers and he used to spend quite a bit of time in my house. We both shared a love for music, mine was probably more mature given I was a little older.

Ryan: We started to run some parties together and it became pretty clear to us that we weren’t satisfied with just playing other peoples music, so we started to make our own. It has been really enjoyable and at times very challenging, but we feel our music is really coming together through our ever growing friendship.

Who does what? Do you each bring different things?

Ryan: I think we both bring different things to the table and when they are combined the output tends to be something of real value and a creation that we are really proud of, especially of late.

Paulo: Yeah I would agree. I mean, we both have our strengths and areas that we want to improve. The main thing is that we are aware of these areas, we share them with each other and ask for advice. Without this honesty the project wouldn’t work as well as it does.

How different is the music you make/play/listen to in summer vs winter?

Paulo: Yeah good question, our music that we make or play out is definitely influenced by the season and the emotions associated with that particular time of year. For example the Faded Memories EP, would be one of which was designed with summer in mind, it just took a while for it to come out. The music that we have coming out next was created for the winter and the dark dance floors.

Ryan: We spend a lot of time listening to different styles and genres throughout the year. When we go to gigs depending on the time of year we usually come home inspired to create, so if this is summer, it tends to be quite bright, whereas winter quite dark as it’s usually coming from the club.

Are you thinking about the audience, the dance floor, a certain club or setting when making music?

Paulo: Yeah good question, our music that we make or play out is definitely influenced by the season and the emotions associated with that particular time of year. For example the Faded Memories EP, would be one of which was designed with summer in mind, it just took awhile for it to come out. What inspired the new one on Ear Porn Music? What was the aim with it?

Ryan: Ear Porn was a label that we became aware of through music searches. We found out quite quickly that the music, which was being pushed by the label, aligned to the sound of the EP and felt that it would be a good home for it. Lauren and her team looked after us and the release process was so easy. The aim of the EP was to create something that would represent transition and change through what people perceive to be “Faded Memories”

Paulo: Yeah I think Ryan is bang on with all that ! We were going through a period of reflection and moments in our lives that were becoming less prevalent as a result of changes that we were going through as a duo and also as individuals. The concept of “Faded Memories” we felt best represented these emotions.

What gear do you use currently, does that matter to you?

Ryan: We tend to keep it quite simple – Ableton as the DAW for production, midi keyboard, launchpad at times, and TR-8.

Paulo: Only thing to add would be we use Logic for our mixes, better workflow we feel for mixing. The gear we use is what we enjoy using. We feel like it is serving us well currently.
Ryan: We have a list of go to kick drums, plug-ins etc. that are consistent in all productions.

What else have you got coming up/are you working on?

Paulo: Plenty of things to be excited about – new music, a few releases and a couple of gigs lined up.

Ryan: Yeah we have a nice release schedule from now all the way to nearly May 23, so just wanna keep that moving along. Fun times ahead !

What is next for you after this interview?

Ryan: Immediately, get out and do some exercise. Always helps to clear the mind before jumping back into some music.

Paulo: Agreed, exercise before music is key for our creative process.
