Hey New Wing, great to chat with you!
For people discovering New Wing for the first time, how would you describe your sound and artistic identity?
My sound is a mix between groove, emotion, grit, and big moments. It borrows elements from the many genres of dance music that have shaped me as an artist and a person blending them into something that will move your feet but also move you emotionally as well. As an artist I want to tell a story with each song and each set, taking listeners on a journey with me.
What first inspired you to start producing electronic music, and who were some of your earliest influences?
I’ve always been into music – I started playing piano at a young age and played trumpet all throughout school. In college I was introduced to electronic music, and from the moment I walked into my first rave (Alesso & R3hab) I was hooked on EDM. From there my taste grew to appreciate all kinds of electronic music, but some early influences were Alesso, Avicii, Above & Beyond, Porter Robinson, and Anjunadeep.
Your music blends elements of melodic house, underground club music, and indie dance. Do you consciously set out to blur genres, or does it happen naturally?
It kind of just comes naturally – I listen to so many different kinds of music, take influence from so many different artists, and I’ve been producing for so long now that my music ends up as a big melting pot. To me, that’s the best kind of music, and it’s a great way to carve out your own niche sound in this saturated environment.
How has your sound evolved since your first releases?
My sound is constantly evolving! I think I have a little more emphasis on groove than I did when I first started. Coming from my previous project, where sound design and melody was a lot more important, I think it took me a while to work out exactly how to build around the groove/drums.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned as an artist over the past few years?
Authenticity is everything. In a world of spammy content and AI slop, people are looking for something real that they can connect with.
You’re maintaining a monthly release schedule. How do you stay creatively inspired while keeping up that level of consistency?
The key is to lean in when you’re feeling inspired and trying to work quickly when you have an idea. Sometimes it’s tough to be consistently writing new music, but I’ve developed my production skills enough that when inspiration strikes I can move quickly to get the ideas out of my head and into Ableton.
Tell us about your new single “BOW.” What was the original spark that led to the track?
This track came out of a session where I was messing around with sound design/presets. I found the patch which would later become the synth at the peak of the track (the electro bass from the second drop). Once I found that + a good melody for it the whole track started to flow from there.
Is there a particular part of “BOW” that you’re most proud of from a production perspective?
How much I’ve managed to improve it over time as I’ve learned. This track has been through a couple of iterations, with different arrangements and sounds, but I am so proud of the final product. Often when I try to change major elements of a track once I’ve written it, I usually end up making the track worse and often end up scrapping it entirely. This time though, I really feel like the released version is the best version of the track.
Every producer has that one piece of gear or plugin they can’t live without. What’s yours?
Serum – I love my analog synths but Serum is absolutely my most used plugin and is the most versatile synth out there. You can make insanely disgusting basses, beautiful analog-sounding pads, and everything in between.
What kind of environment inspires your creativity the most—late nights in the studio, traveling, clubs, or something else?
Seeing music live! Whether it’s at a club or a festival – the feeling of music on a big system and the energy of a good crowd always inspires me to get back into the studio and make something.
What’s the most rewarding moment you’ve experienced in your career so far?
It’s probably watching Solomun drop one of my tracks on the Ultra livestream! He is a massive inspiration for me, and this happened when the project was still more an idea than a reality. It showed me that there was some real potential with the music I was writing and gave me a lot of confidence that was needed to launch the project.
If you could collaborate with any producer, vocalist, or band, who would be at the top of your list and why?
Producer is a tough one – would have to say either Cassian or Max Styler as they are two of my favorites and in my opinion some of the best guys out there right now. Vocalist – I’d love to work with Don Toliver. His vocals are so inspiring for me, I’ve already done two different bootlegs/edits of his music.
Outside of music, what are some interests or hobbies that influence your creativity?
I love running, I try to get a good run in at least every other day. Pushing myself and sweating it out helps me clear my head and get in the zone.
What can fans expect from the upcoming releases in your monthly schedule? Will each track explore a different side of New Wing?
Yes! Hopefully fans will find something familiar in each song, but there’s so many different genres and vibes I’ll be exploring over my next few releases. The next track that’s set to release in September, called Thousand Stars, has more of a melodic, progressive vibe and was inspired in part by early Deadmau5 records.
Looking ahead, what are your biggest goals as an artist over the next year or two?
I’d love to start touring! We just did a video collaboration with a dope NYC based collective called SAMA, and we’re cooking something up yet to be announced with them. Hopefully that’s the start of many more shows where we can make moments and memories together. I love being in the studio but DJing and sharing my music with an audience is always the most exciting and rewarding feeling. I also want to build a bigger world around my music – I’m working on a music video for my next release and I want to do more music-adjacent projects that expand the universe of New Wing.
Finally, if someone walks away after listening to “BOW,” what’s the one feeling or impression you hope stays with them?
Awe + a little bit of nostalgia. And I hope if they are listening on headphones their first thought is – I need to hear this on a big system. That’s what it’s made for!
