LA’s rising star, Urulu teams up with the New Zealand brothers and future house producers, Chaos in the CBD, for the ever-badass Needwant label’s upcoming release, Never Again.
All producers involved have firmly rooted their cutting edge style in the emotional and sonic realms of house music’s origins, drawing inspiration from the skipping garage beats and big fluttering bass lines of Todd Edwards and the belting diva vocals and jacking 909 percussion of old school house pioneers like Kerri Chandler. This release, much like the artists’ previous work, manages to sound as if it was dug up from the dusty vinyl vaults of the underground, but recaptured perfectly in today’s digital age—sounding fat, and just as fresh.
Urulu’s “Never Again” gets the release moving amidst some swinging hat patterns and submerged chords, eventually slipping into soft delayed vocal lines and big undulating bass notes that bounce the track through to the end. Chaos in the CBD joins in on the second track, “Mind the Gap,” a very sexy and efficient slice of deep garage that’s poised, ready to kick any party’s ass into overdrive. The B-side gets Chaos in the CBD’s “Marina Trench,” whose melancholy chord phrases and ethereal pad movements manage to evoke memories of sunrise comedowns and ex-lover’s lost emotions. And rounding out the EP is “Between Us,” a true testament to these producers’ talent at recapturing the past in this emotive acid house ballad.
Projected Release date: April 29th.
