Skatman brings controlled chaos to Binh’s label Time Passages label with his new EP, Lost In Motion Double. The eight track release dives deep into house, electro, techno, synth and wave to craft a stark retro-future world of irresistible body music.
Berlin-based, Tunisia-born Skatman heads up Cognitive Prophecy and has always operated at the intersection of myriad different electronic genres. He fuses the past and future tiny sounds with a madhouse aura – dense and chaotic on the surface, but with intriguing narratives and a range of human emotions always rising up through his angular rhythms. As well as laying down uncategorisable DJ sets around the world, he has built up a revered catalogue on labels likes International Deejay Gigolo, Running Back and Correspondent.
Despite his magpie approach to sound, there is cohesion and precision in all of the tracks on this EP. ‘Make Me Move’ is all flailing breaks and fizzy, fuzzy synth tension that conveys a post apocalyptic landscape. ‘Werewolf’ ramps up the pressure with overdriven drums and writing synth loops, then ‘Spirito Mistico’ is a dark wave and Italo fusion for head and body. ‘Nothing Is Real’ brings jacked drums and eerie, electrified stabs with a menace vocal before ‘Reason feat. Red Eye’ rewires classic Detroit techno with flashy synths bringing hi-tek soul. ‘Holding Up Her Game’ is a stomping, sparkling and electroclash-adjacent before the bright melodies and snappy metal textures of ‘Lost In Motion’ and wonky electro swagger of ‘Forever More’ close down in style.
Lost In Motion Double is another boundary-blurring statement from Skatman that underlines his ability to fuse disparate influences into bold, imaginative visions for the dance floor.
