Still only 24, Brazilian artist JP Castro, now based between Miami and São Paulo, has developed a fully self-contained process. He writes, produces, records and mixes his own material, with a background that leans as much on songwriting as it does on club music. Breakout single Through My Mind reached the Beatport Hype Top 5 and secured editorial backing from Beatportal, alongside support from Black Coffee and a wider circle that includes Zerb, Kevin de Vries and Maz.
Her new single Every High leans into a more refined, song-led approach. The production is clean and controlled, built around layered pads and a restrained vocal that carries the track without overstating it, and with more than enough weight in the low end to hold its own in club.
With the single out now, we asked him to put together a playlist of his of his all-time favorites.
The Killers – Mr. Brightside (Jacques Lu Cont Remix)
This record, to me, is one of my personal favorites and a long-time influence on my taste and music. I have memories of it throughout my whole musical journey. Very special one to me. I always find myself being pulled back to it sooner or later!
Caribou – Can’t Do Without you
What can I say about this one? The melody and composition give me goosebumps through the years, and they never seem to disappear. Timeless record.
Coldplay – Life in Technicolor ii
I’ve always leaned towards melodic music. In this song, all art forms become one to me. In a lot of the songs I listen to, colors, paintings, memories, and of course the song itself, find a place where it belongs inside my head.
Cary Brothers – Ride
I first heard Ride when I was maybe 14. I have had so many influences in different places. Throughout the song, beyond the beautiful feeling it is being expressed, there’s this very special combination of specific colors and energy to it!
RUFUS DU SOL – Underwater
Definitely one of the guys’ most brilliant songs to me, so much depth and beauty, a personal timeless record.
Pryda – Melo
Eric Prydz and all the Swedes have been of so much musical influence on me as an Artist, this track reflects very well certain feelings I’m always searching for, without saying a single word.
Avicii – Fade Into Darkness
One of the best melody writers, Avicii, has really influenced me in so many different ways. This song really connected to me, not just because of the feeling and energy it expresses altogether, but melodically, and lyrically as well, which is what usually comes about in second place after the melody for me. I’m always attracted to how a song feels; to me, that’s very important.
Depeche Mode – Enjoy The Silence
One of my all-time favorites, and definitely an all-time classic, the connection I have to this song is not only timeless, but it is also a part of a collection of memories that become almost subconscious influences in a very special way.
Sebastian Ingrosso, Alesso – Calling (Lose My Mind) ft. Ryan Tedder
This tune is pure melodic euphoria, a combination I’m very fond of. Extreme goosebumps.
Daft Punk – Digital Love
“Digital Love” Draws me in with a very special feeling at heart. I guess I’m always being attracted to the hopefulness that this song invites me to feel. Personally, there’s this musical space where melancholy, hopefulness, and energy meet. That place is pure magic. Something like “Purple”, I’d say.
