Jamie Coins is one of most exciting talents to come out of the Brazilian electronic scene having featured on the likes of Steve Lawler’s VIVa LIMITED and La Pera with collaborations alongside artists such as Classmatic. We sat down with him to discuss his latest release on Revival New York, his production process and the year ahead.

Hey Jamie, welcome to MI4L! Thanks for joining us today, how has the New Year been treating you so far?

Hi! It’s been great so far, thank you. I’m excited for all the opportunities and projects that this new year brings.

You are one of the fastest rising talents to come out of the Brazilian electronic scene over the past 12 months – who were some of your biggest influences growing up?

When I was growing up, I was inspired by a diverse range of artists and genres, but if I had to pick a few, I would say DJ Marky, The Prodigy, Bad Company )EIB(, DJ Zinc, Ed Rush and Optical, Beastie Boys, Wu Tang Clan and Chemical Brothers. Their music inspired me to pursue a career in electronic music and taught me the importance of creativity and originality in one’s work.

Now you’re based in Barcelona, what inspired your move there and what is the electronic scene like?

I chose to base myself in Barcelona because of its vibrant electronic music scene and rich cultural heritage. The city is home to a thriving community of artists and musicians, and it offers a wealth of inspiration for my work and endless opportunities for growth and creativity.

Your new ‘Transitions’ EP sees you return to Revival New York following your label debut last year with ‘Still Flexin’. How do you feel to be returning for the label’s first release of 2023?

It is an honor to be releasing my new EP “Transitions” on Revival New York. The label is known for its commitment to fostering creativity and originality in its artists, and I am grateful to be a part of it. I hope that this release will inspire others to take risks, embrace change, and explore new avenues in their own lives and work.

How does this release differ from the last? What makes it a good home for your sound?

“Transitions” differs from my previous release in that it’s a bit more experimental and pushes the boundaries of my sound. Revival New York has always been a good home for my sound because they embrace creative freedom and encourage their artists to be innovative.  They have always been supportive of my sound and let me be myself.

What was your production process for the EP?

My new EP is a testament to the power of taking risks and exploring new possibilities. It is a departure from my previous work and represents a new chapter in my creative journey. I believe that it is only by pushing ourselves out of our comfort zones that we can truly grow and evolve.

My production process was a reflection of this philosophy. I approached each track with an open mind and a willingness to experiment, while still maintaining a strong sense of direction and purpose. The result is a body of work that is both bold and thought-provoking. The first track “ Transitions”  is a track that was born naturally one night I was on the sofa listening to some old tapes (on youtube) of Speed garage, it was like a click in my mind, I ran directly to my home studio and produced it naturally, took me just a few hours to have it 100% done. The other track of the EP “ Collapsus” was one of the tracks I came up with during the pandemic 2 years ago and it was “lost” on my hard drive. Last summer, I decided to finish it, so I sent it to a few friends and the feedback was amazing. Then one of my best friends Classmatic decided to play on Amnesia Ibiza (El Row) and when he dropped it at the party people were like“Wtf is this?”. Michael Discenza was in the DJ Booth with us that day and asked me what track it was. Then a few weeks later we signed it to Revival and the rest is history.

The productions are packed with tough drums, FX, low-end frequencies and more – what was your most important piece of kit you used when producing the record?

I produced both tracks in the box, using Fl studio as a DAW and its stock plugins. The most important was the basic synth it comes with it. “3xOSC”. I think the Beats, the vocals and the bassline also have an importance on both records. The most important factor I think was the mix of styles both tracks have, which gave a fresh energy to it, theres a bit of Speed Garage, Progressive, Boogie, Tech House and Acid. Fl Studio always give me a lot of creative freedom and allows me to shape the sounds exactly how I want them.

Thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us today! Last thing, what is on the horizon for 2023?

Thank you for having me! For 2023, I have a number of exciting projects in the works, including collaborations with other artists and live performances. I am also looking forward to continuing to evolve my sound and push the boundaries of what is possible in electronic music.
