Hey Gerald! It’s a pleasure to have you here with us. How has 2023 been for you so far?

Hey, thanks for having me 🙂

I’m really pleased with how my year has kicked off, I recently released new music through my good friend Jjoska’s label Interfonic and have upcoming shows in Bali and Jakarta in July, with potential plans for shows in Europe in the summer. I’ve also been devoting a lot of time to the studio and planning a few more releases for later in the year!

Congrats on your latest release «Ground Check» EP on Interfonic. What was your inspiration behind this record?

To be honest, I’m not exactly sure where to begin. It all started in late 2022 when I stumbled upon an old project I had created way back in 2018. Then I found myself getting sucked into the amazing vortex that is SASH every weekend and was truly inspired by artists such as Dyed Soundorom, Sub-Ann, DJ Wild, Rich NxT, Mihai Popoviciu, Kepler, James Dexter, Michael Rigby, Rossi, Chris Stussy, and Huerta. Their music and performances really shaped my inspiration for this EP, and I found myself overflowing with ideas and creativity as a result.

How did you first get into music production and DJing?

During my high school days, I began experimenting with my father’s records at home. I had a deep appreciation for electronic music from an early age, and I distinctly remember being captivated by Tiesto’s records that my uncle had. It was this experience that ignited my passion for DJing, and after seven years of honing my skills as a DJ, I ventured into music production as well.

What are some musical influences that you believe have shaped your sound?

Choosing just a few influences is challenging for me, as my musical inspirations are quite diverse. I’ve always had a wide range of interests, from funk, disco, and new wave to hip hop, and I’m particularly drawn to underground music from Europe. Some of my major influences include the likes of George Clinton and James Brown for their funk styles, Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream for their European electronica, and Depeche Mode and Gary Numan for their synth-infused 80s sound. However, my influences go beyond these genres and artists, as I’m constantly exploring and drawing inspiration from various musical sources.

Can you name some of the instruments or plugins that you believe define your sound?

I think my gotos are Pigment, M1, sylenth, diva, 303, korg and massive.

What has been your highlight gig this year so far?

Throughout this year, I have been dedicating more time to the production side of my work and planning upcoming gigs for later in the year. However, the highlight of my year so far has been in November 2022 when I had the opportunity to open the party at SASH Sydney for Mihai Popovicu. It was an incredible experience as I built up the dancefloor from scratch, creating an unforgettable atmosphere.

How do you define success? Is it strictly about numbers, or is there more to it?

For me, success can be defined in various ways, and it is not strictly limited to numbers. While measurable achievements such as financial gains, awards, or recognition can be markers of success, they do not necessarily encompass the entirety of success. Success is a multi-dimensional concept that involves personal, professional, and emotional aspects of one’s life. It is a multi-faceted concept that encompasses personal fulfilment, pursuing passions, contributing to others, continuous growth, and well-being. It is important to define success in a way that aligns with an individual’s values, beliefs, and aspirations, and goes beyond mere quantitative measurements.

Now that «Ground Check» EP is out, what is next for GECO?

In the near future, I plan to dedicate more time to my work in the studio as I have a few projects lined up for upcoming releases plus a bunch of really cool shows too, excited for the next few months.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to answer our questions, is there anything else you would like to mention before we go?

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all the ravers who have supported us, as without you, we wouldn’t be where we are today. I also want to express my appreciation to everyone who has supported me since day one. Thank you.
