A few words from Jackie O’Brien about the track, “My brother (and the band’s longtime manager) passed away in my arms on the shore of Lake Travis. As crazy as it sounds, it was an uncannily beautiful moment. I witnessed the sky opening by way of some monolithic, benevolent, divine force. I was filled with sublime peace and ecstatic joy, deeply humbled in the face of supreme love. Total life affirmed in death.
For me the song is just trying to describe that feeling, humbled and ecstatic in the face of staggering love, somewhere between a supernatural sojourn and a religious service. Breezy, communal, joyous in the face of loss. A reminder that all endings are new beginnings and the possibilities are truly limitless.”
This lively track, which will be included on their upcoming album Emergency Leisure out August 2, exudes the lyrical motif, “I get the most high with you.” The music takes more from upbeat soul and gospel compared to the other, more disco-driven singles. It moves between Jackie’s singular vocal to big group harmonies like a congregation joining a hymn, with a psychedelic, spoken-word detour in the middle.
This heart-breaking yet warming story behind the track is one any listener would sympathise with and feel in the track’s songwriting. The band, based in Austin, comprises Jackie O’Brien (bass/vocals) and Curtis Roush (guitar/vocals), and has recently welcomed Mia Carruthers (keys/vocals), Zac Catanzaro (drums), and Juan Alfredo Ríos (percussion).
With four studio albums to date, including the critically acclaimed Space Is Still the Place and Jude I & II the band’s sound is both iconoclastic and constantly evolving. They have composed original soundtracks for HBO, MTV, and Nintendo, and at the request of Bryan Cranston, wrote and recorded the award-winning theme for Amazon’s “Sneaky Pete”. Renowned for their explosive live performances, they have graced the stages of renowned festivals like Austin City Limits and Lollapalooza, as well as opened for Aerosmith, Osees, and The Flaming Lips. Their innovative sound has garnered critical acclaim from respected sources such as CLASH, NPR, The Wild Honey Pie, and Earmilk, among others.
