Interview with Doug Gomez

Q1: Who is Doug Gomez?

Colombian born, NYC raised since I was 1.5 yrs old. DJ, producer, remixer, label owner, now living in Costa Rica. Djing since I was 17 yrs old and worked at 2 record labels in the 90s. They were ZYX Music from Germany and Waako Records in NYC. AfroSoul is my main style of music I dj and produce. Crowned Afrohouse artist of the year in 2019 by Traxsource.com

Q2: Tell about your new Remix On Big Speaker Music?

Well, I was approached by Joe Ventura, owner of the label to do a remix. I’m heavily influenced by the soulful house of legends like Louie Vega, Joe Claussell etc. So my first instinct was to go that style, heavy on the percussion and soul. Sulene has a strong voice so I almost went more clubbier but I stuck with what i know.

Q3: Who are your greatest influences?

Louie Vega

Louie has so many great songs and remixes, hard to pick just one. This one is amazing, with all the live instrumentation, a live jazz afro latin journey.

Joe Claussell

A huge inspiration to many, Joe took this vocal to a higher place and it sounded amazing at Body & Soul.

Antonio Ocasio

The man behind so many afro latin vibes and one of the pioneers of the afrolatin house in NYC.

Q4: Can you let us about scene in New York?

The 80s & 90s were magical in NYC. The underground and club scene was thriving. There were so many clubs and parties every night, it didn’t matter, they were all packed.  The parties that influenced me were:

The Shelter – Timmy Regisford

Sound Factory Bar – Louie Vega

Red Zone – David Morales

Sound Factory – Junior Vasquez

Body & Soul – Joe Claussell, Danny Krivit, Francois K

Q5: How have you been keeping busy during lockdown?

Making music, lots of remixes and doing work for the record label.

Q6: What else can we expect from you over the next year?

DJ Gigs, things are starting to open up and gigs are starting to come in. Hopefully things will only get better.
