The Lisbon-based Ruínas collective returns with a brand new release, the four-track EP “Rural Exodus” that marks the debut of French producer Nu Selva. The EP kicks off with the mesmerizing and enigmatic track “Earth Memories,” setting the tone with its deep and surreal march. Following that, “Saving Life” takes a raw and heartfelt approach to Chicago house, while “Dreams” blends a bold and captivating bassline with warm and ethereal pads. Lastly, “Farol Signal” stands poised to elevate the emotional intensity of any warehouse party.

We had a chat with Nu Selva about the release, and what’s going on in their world.

INTERVIEW:

Who is Nu Selva ?
I’m Thomas, I was born in Paris in 1990. I moved to Lisbon 5 years ago to enjoy the proximity to the ocean and live in a foreign country. I love hearing different languages and practicing sports (bodysurf, bike, surf, basketball…), I teach mathematics to teenagers and I will begin next September Ableton classes for kids! Music is a hobby I do to experience nice social moments with people and to develop my imagination.

Tell us about your new release ‘Rural Exodus’ on Ruínas?
It’s my first EP, it took me 4 years to achieve it because it’s done only with a computer and a mouse and I was always changing some details.

What was the first thing that attracted you to the world of electronic music?
Place de la Bastille, Paris, June 2006. The place was full of people dancing in front of a big stage. It was beautiful to experience that and then I began my exploration of electronic music.

Who are your greatest influences?
Lars Behrenroth, he is connected to a big part of the deep house scene. He shares monthly a mix of an artist and his own selection of new tracks.

Sem Marini, co-owner together with Mike Sharon of Ultra Knites label, he’s my inspiration for DJ sets: not only a selection of music but mixing the tracks together and creating an original soundscape.

Brawther, his ” Deep Down Paris ” from the Untitled EP on Balance Recordings is my favourite track to bike with.

How would you define your sound?
I have two main interests in music production: relaxing hip-hop instrumentals and dubby, hypnotic deep house. From them, I like to explore ambient music, techno, and acid vibes or downtempo…

How has your sound evolved so far?
From experiments and my first tracks with Fruity Loops and Reason, I got to Ableton when I first arrived in Lisbon. Now I fully enjoy music production with the MPC One.

What is the scene like in Lisbon at the moment?
I heard really good music here in Lisbon from a lot of different people in various styles of music. I think the city and the surroundings need more comfortable and large authorized spaces dedicated to music and culture, like places you can find in Berlin.

What else can we expect from you over the next year?
Maybe an EP about Portugal and all the good things I experienced here. Oxalá!
