French DJ/producer Konvex (FR) is an AZZUR label regular heavily influenced by the sounds of disco and soul. We caught up with him ahead of his collaboration release with Meloko and Hyenah, ‘Champion Mum’, on One Tribe Records

How’s your summer been?

Summer went really well, I had put my Konvex project on hold in 2022 and 2023 to focus on other projects, but I missed electronic music so much that I decided to return full-time to Konvex in 2023. Summer 2024 was truly amazing! We launched our boat parties in Marseille twice a month, and I also performed a lot in my region (Southern France) as well as abroad (Berlin, Ibiza, among others). Since good things never come alone, I became a father for the second time on July 29th!§

We’d love to know more about your background and what sparked your passion for Afro House.

I’ve been playing Afro House for nearly 10 years. This music particularly resonates with me due to it’s grooves and rhythmic placements, as I come from a percussion background. What I enjoy and find inspiring are the rhythms and melodies from the African continent and the way it brings a form of trance conducive to dancing; however, I am more reserved about the developments of what is now called Afro House. This term has become somewhat of a catch-all in my opinion, but if it helps to highlight this vision of electronic music, that’s a good thing!

Tell us about your upcoming single on AMÉMÉ’s One Tribe, ‘Champion Mum’. Why did you decide to partner with Meloko and Hyenah on this one

Meloko has been my lifelong friend! We work together all the time, and some days I talk to him on the phone more often than with my wife! When I received the vocal from Joy Msanii, I sent it to Meloko, and he immediately connected with it. It was a bit later that we thought about sending it to Hyenah to collaborate on a more club-oriented and danceable version.

‘Champion Mum’ has a sleek, organic feel to it. What do you take inspiration from when crafting Afro House beats?

Generally, I always start with the piano. Once I have the composition, I look for a vocalist (male or female, depending on what the composition inspires). Once the composition is complete (piano, vocals), I work on the grooves and the development of the track. This often results in very emotional and atmospheric pieces! That’s when I focus on creating a club and dance floor vision for the track (either on my own or by collaborating with friends, as I did on “Champion Mum”).

What would you say has been your best set of 2024 so far?

I think it was at Raspoutin in Paris. The club was packed and the energy was really cool when the resident (Pofio) handed over the decks to me around 2am. I played until closing, spinning some very atmospheric tracks on two decks while keeping much more club-oriented tracks on the other two decks to maintain maximum energy… I don’t think I even had time to finish my drink in those 4 hours! I came out sweaty, but it was amazing.

What’s your favorite record currently and why?

Recently, I’ve fallen in love with Nick Morgan’s work. I adore his approach to music and the way he makes his tracks groove, it’s always effective! I also really appreciate the work of the Magnifik crew (Samm and Ajna), and I like that, like us (with AZZUR), they produce and release their music on their own label. It’s important to me that the electronic scene is represented by small independent labels, it’s in the roots of our movement!

Do you have any other projects planned for the rest of the year that you can share with us?

Of course! We’re preparing the AZZUR parties for this winter and planning the label’s 10th anniversary for 2025 with parties all over Europe! We will also release the next 3 singles and an album under the ‘AZZUR’ name this winter with Meloko, Baron, Selim Sivade, and myself. I also have collaborations planned with Pofio, Yoni, Garla, Mickael Ritter. Finally, I’m working on a remix of the track ‘Shuka’ by Emmanuel Jal, Samba Mapangala, and Shield; in short, I’m brimming with ideas and projects!!!
