Camila Isasi is an exciting emerging name in the house world. Based in Ibiza and active as a DJ since 2017, she plays across the house spectrum, always with depth and soul, whether exploring Afro, melodic or more tech-leaning sounds. She has already performed at iconic venues on the island, such as Lío Ibiza, as well as other spots like UM Beachclub and KOBA, and this impressive new track marks her production debut in style…
Hi Camila, thanks for joining us. How’s life in Ibiza?
Hi everyone! Thanks for inviting me. What can I say? Life in Ibiza is wonderful. I truly feel very lucky to have grown up on this island. Although life is very intense in the summer, it all makes up for in the winter when we can relax and focus on spending time with ourselves.
You’ve been active as a DJ since 2017; why did you decide to start spinning records?
Well, music has always been a part of my life. My first contact with it was at age 9 when I was attending the Ibiza Conservatory of Music. There I learned to play the cello, music theory, and choir… but when I started high school, I decided to quit because I couldn’t balance it with my studies. Because of that, I suppose it’s always played an important role in my life, and in 2017, I decided to start doing small DJ and production courses, until I realized that it’s something essential in my life, and there’s no turning back!
Let’s talk about your latest release, ‘HANAMI’, which is out now on Fiona Kraft’s Non Merci Music; we’d love to hear about the story behind it.
For me, HANAMI has been the most profound project I’ve ever created. It arose from a difficult time after the death of a loved one. For me, it’s a reminder to enjoy the little things (HANAMI literally means flower viewing and is the Japanese practice or custom of viewing cherry blossoms when they are in full bloom.) I wanted to express myself, and for me, it’s much easier to do so through music. I could say it just came naturally.
Who would you say is your biggest inspiration and why?
My mother, she taught me that with effort, anything is possible, and I think she instilled in me values based on respect and kindness. Musically speaking, I’d say there are many DJs doing great work and trying to help other emerging artists, and I think that’s admirable.
Which record do you spin the most during your DJ sets?
More than a record, an artist. I really like 104 BPM, Atmos Blaq and Da Africa Deep. I have a few favorite songs that I might repeat in my sets, like Sizwa Ngani by 104 BPM.
You’re known to play soul-filled House, Afro House and Melodic leaning sounds; why do these genres speak to you?
These genres connect with me above all because of that very primitive, very human African rhythm. I really like music that transports you, that makes you travel to those places we associate with our subconscious. That’s why I like those melodic influences so much.
What do you like to get up to outside of music?
Outside of music, I love to sleep, I’m a person who needs to rest mentally and physically. It’s also important to spend time with my family, partner, and friends and even better if it’s on the beach, i need the sea close to me.
Do you have anything in the works you can share with us?
My second single with NON MERCI MUSIC, “Calmly Chaotic,” will be released soon. It’s also very melodic and melancholic. I’m still on cloud nine with HANAMI and very excited about everything that’s happening this year.
