Award-winning DJ and producer Hever Jara has steadily etched his name through releases on labels like Nervous, SwitchLab, Wired, and his own Latin Dutch Records, boasting an eclectic sound that mixes up house, tech, afro, and funky house. The Medellín born and bred talent now joins us to chat about influences, running a label and advice for any newcomers!
Hi Hever Jara, Welcome to Music Is 4 Lovers! How are things?
Hello, Music is 4 Lovers team! I feel honoured to be able to share a bit of my experiences with you; everything is going very well; this end of the year has been full of work and a lot of Music.
Your Music spans a range of styles, from house and tech house to afro and funky house. How do you maintain your unique sound while exploring such diverse genres?
I’ve always been a fan of various musical genres. I think that when you have the inspiration to create a new track, you simply adapt ideas from everything you listen to and enjoy. Still, when you execute it, you will unconsciously have a particular style that always bears that characteristic stamp of each producer that has been forged over years of work in the studio.
Being from Medellín, Colombia, how has your hometown influenced your Music? What was the music scene like growing up there?
The Colombian scene has had incredible growth, especially in Medellin, the city has had a huge impact on my career, helping me better understand my role as an artist, learning how to put together a party from scratch, reading the dance floor to know how to understand and manage the moments of a live session also helps you a lot to understand how to make your own Music and how to execute certain styles for certain moments. Today, it feels like a massive and world-leading scene full of great artists and people who are working to continue contributing to its expansion.
You’ve had releases on big labels like Nervous, Wired, and SwitchLab. How do you decide which labels to collaborate with, and have any of these labels influenced your sound?
I usually try to sign my Music to labels that I play a lot of Music from in my sets. Wanting to release my Music with them helps me improve. I have a lot of labels on my bucket list, and I hope to continue to achieve the professional sound I’ve always wanted. Each of these labels has influenced my sound at every point in my learning path, and this has allowed me to continue to improve every day with each new track.
Your latest single, ‘Bali’, on Adesso Music is a vibrant mix of organic percussion and hypnotic grooves. Can you tell us about the inspiration behind the track and how it came together?
I’m really happy to know the words you use to describe Bali; it means I was able to achieve the feeling I was looking for for this track.
Percussion and groove have always been present in my approach from the beginning. I always try to create a track that works for me on the dance floor, meant for some moment of the party. This time, Bali was born to play at a yacht party I had in July in the Aegean Sea, Greece. I wanted to create a song that sounded like a sunny day, the sea and a good dance atmosphere.
Your productions have support from heavyweights such as David Guetta, John Summit, and Roger Sanchez. How does it feel to have your Music recognized by such legendary names in the industry?
Every time I receive support from big names on the world scene, it is something that fills me with happiness, and I realize that by working, studying and being consistent in your process, you can achieve great things.
As the founder of Latin Dutch Records, how do you balance running a label with your career as a DJ and producer? What’s your vision for the label moving forward?
I think it all goes hand in hand, the sound you develop as a producer influences your taste and musical selection when it comes to being a DJ. With all this, now you want to expose your sound under your own label, and you are releasing tracks from other producers who are also influenced by your proposal; I see everything as a match where everything has the characteristic colour of your name and your movement. Signing my Music with big labels in the world helps me learn and understand how they work and move in the industry; I see a promising future at Latin Dutch Records since I am forming a solid work team where each one will play their role in a great way and it will allow us to grow as a company to continue contributing in an increasingly professional, focused and visionary way to all the new talents who want to join us.
You’ve performed on stages worldwide, from Greece to Brazil. Are there any performances or events that stand out as career highlights for you, and why?
Each of the international events I have participated in has been very important in my process because they have allowed me to grow and mature as a person and as an artist. For any new talent, it is a dream to be able to go out into the world and propose your own sound. Today, naturally, I have been able to perform in different countries around the world, and I know that many people from other cultures and ways of seeing the scene and understanding Music have enjoyed my work.
What advice would you give to up-and-coming DJs and producers looking to break into the international electronic music scene, based on your own journey?
It may sound cliché, but it’s totally true: believe in yourself, no matter what they say or where you are, feel, and work for your dreams, nothing will come just by thinking, you have to take action and go for it, study, prepare, analyze your flaws and improve them, you have to be aware that everything is a process, you will always do better and better, but you have to be consistent. Whatever you do, do it with love and patience to improve, because sooner or later, you will reap all that passion you once sowed!
