This month, UK DJ/producer Sam Holland returns to his own label with another standout tune to kick off what’s sure to be a breakout 2024. Since launching, HEART + MIND has received influential support from DJs such as BBC Radio 1’s Pete Tong and Sarah Story. As well as establishing his own label and a sound that blends disco, tribal and house, Sam has dropped tracks on imprints like Four Thirty Two, Club Bad and Knee Deep In Sound. We caught up with Sam ahead of his new single, ‘Satisfy’.

Hey Sam! Welcome to Music Is 4 Lovers; tell us about where you’re from and how you got into electronic music.

Hey, MI4L, thanks for having me. I’m from a small town outside of London where I started my career in music.  I first got into electronic music during the dubstep days at Fabric, this led me to exploring other sub-genres and where I soon found my love of House music.

Next month, you’re dropping a brand new single, ‘Satisfy’ on your HEART + MIND imprint; we’d love to know more about this release.

Yes, I’m really excited to release this single. I feel it’s one of my more classier sounding records. I always aim to make music that will ‘hopefully’ sound good in the years to follow; hopefully, this is one of those!

Since launching your own imprint, you’ve received a wealth of support from big names such as BBC Radio 1’s Pete Tong and Sarah Story. Why did you decide to start your own label?

I’m over the moon with the support I’ve received so far for HEART + MIND, especially from the likes of Pete, Sarah and Danny. They’ve been amazing supporting me, and to be played on BBCR1 has been a dream come true. It’s also led to other opportunities such as releasing on Danny’s ‘Nothing Else Matters’ label and also doing the ‘Peak Time Mix’ for Sarah’s show.

I started HEART + MIND primarily to release my music quicker and have control over the scheduling. My next goal is to provide a platform for other artists and eventually to start running events that promote these artists.

What’s the best set you’ve played and why?

The best set I’ve ever played was actually following Carl Cox at We Are FSTVL, many years ago. It was the first time I ever played to a big festival crowd!

‘Satisfy’ sounds great, really hearing the disco influence here; any favourite disco tracks?

Thank you! Yes, big disco influence here. Some of my favourite disco records are:

Donna Summer – I feel love

Love Unlimited Orchestra – Loves Theme

Lou Rawls – You’ll Never Find Another Love Like Mine

I love orchestral disco records with big strings. This is where I draw a lot of inspiration for my own music, tension and passion is what I go for!

How did you first learn to DJ?

I first learnt to DJ with friends during my early raving days. After that, the House scene took my interest and I started buying vinyl records. I got myself some Technic 1210s which I still use today. In my opinion, learning to DJ on vinyl initially is the best schooling, as you learn the raw art form.

What are your plans for the rest of 2024 in and outside of music?

Musically this year, I have 2x releases scheduled on my label HEART + MIND plus, an exciting release on a new label that my friend Mike (owner of Revival NY) is launching. I absolutely love the music I’m putting out this year as it’s a true reflection of me creatively. On a personal note, I’m looking forward to spending more time in my second home, Barcelona, as well as travelling to Ibiza, Marrakesh and New York to see friends.
