40 Records is the new label from London DJ & innovative producer KDA. The idea of this family collective plans to bring together an unbelievable cast of fresh talent, at the same time serving as a platform for KDA’s own releases. Stepping up to the plate for its first release is the label head himself with ‘KNKY Numbers 001’.

‘KNKY Number 001’ is five ridiculously good edits that stand very close to the edge! Kicking of with Roisin Murphy’s 2012 ‘Simulation’. KDA amps up the slo-mo chug original and flips it into a powerful peak time weapon. Next up, KDA twists Cardi B and Kehlani’s 2018 ‘Ring’, taking the genius lyrics “you don’t hit my number no more” all the way up to the next level with his naughty Vogue rework.

Post dubstep figure James Blake’s ‘Do You Ever’ was a throwback to his London clubbing days. This time Kris takes the pop come dubstep original down to the dirty basement with its rolling crunching beats and relentless groove, while Tottenham Wretch32’s ‘Traktor’ gets a dark and deadly grime come dancehall update. Closing out the EP, KDA flexes his production muscle, showing out here as the maverick producer and innovator that he is, turning Mariah Carey’s GTFO into a super-luxe garage house monster.

Track for Track with KDA

London scenester KDA drops a killer collection of edits on his The 40 Records label. Taking existing cuts from artists like Roisin Murphy, Maria Carey and James Blake, twisting them up to deliver an incredibly exciting five track mixtape EP. We asked the former model, real names Kris di Angelis, to give us the lowdown on the five tracks.

ROISIN MURPHY X KDA / SIMULATION ( KDA REMIX)

It’s possibly my favourite Roisin Murphy track, and one of the sexiest things I’ve ever heard. I wanted to do a version I could play out, and that she would proper ‘ave it to, which I think I did!

CARDI B X KDA / RING ( CARDI GOES VOGUE REMIX)

What if you took Cardi B and made her sound super chic? That was all I kept thinking when I made this. Like her fashion red carpet vibe, on this remix, maybe she sounds more like she looks in the Mugler moments.

JAMES BLAKE X KDA / DO YOU EVER ( KDA NO LOVE EDIT)

My mate’s an influencer and he used the original for a make-up tutorial, and for some reason the whole idea hit me hard watching his video. I love the vocal, and the meaning of the lyrics. Got absolutely nothing to do with any break up I was going through at the time…

WRETCH32 X KDA / TRAKTOR

I made this a while ago, the original is such a well-made record and I was obsessed with the bass line and the piano section. Now it’s more of a slow growly pumper, tried and tested so I know it sounds good on a system.

MARIA CAREY X KDA / GTFO( KDA LONDON REMIX)

I’m an enormous Mariah fan, and I think she deserves better dance remixes than she often gets. If she only knew about London dance music! I added the three little birds myself.
