PREMIERE + INTERVIEW — John Tareugram – Sourelha [Chat Noir Rec.] [MI4L.com]

1.) Who are Chat Noir?

Chat Noir is a Paris based distributor, specialized in underground electronic music. We provide both vinyl & digital distribution services to labels. We are part of a bigger structure called Kuroneko Media which include our pressing plant Kuroneko Phonogram Manufacture & a label services for non-electronic labels. Chat Noir is also running three in-house labels called Chat Noir Rec., Chat Noir Tools & Griffé. Finally, our webshop is almost ready and should be online in a couple of weeks.

2.) Tell about your new compilation album!

The whole point of these “House De France” compilation is to highlight the new french scene. The first one was released in 2018 and was a huge success for us but most of the tracks were already released on another labels. In two years a lot of things have changed, therefore the shape of this second one have also changed somewhat. This new project includes 16 exclusive titles in digital and there is a «Vinyl Sampler» which includes 6 titles from the digital version. Tracklisting is inspired by the mixed compilations from the 90’s: it is built like a DJ set with an evolution and coherent sequences between the tracks. We recorded a promo mix which features the initial tracklisting with the mixed titles to promote the release. The project aims to show the diversity of the new French house scene by highlighting different sub-genres of this movement: ambient, deep-house, tech-house, acid, minimal, italo-disco, electrofunk… The artists present on this compilation represent the future of our scene and we are very proud to push them forward.

3.) Who are your greatest influences?

As Chat Noir Distribution it is difficult to name our influences because we are distributing a lot of different things: house, techno, minimal, electro… There is something for every taste in our catalogue.

4.) Please tell us about the electronic scene in Paris. What artists do you love past and present that have inspired and encouraged you and what parties that you love going to have helped your musical evolution.

The scene in Paris (and in France globally) is amazing right now, there is so much good music and so much great producers! From house to techno through bass music, tech-house and more. We are really proud of what’s happening and it’s an honor to being part of it and to help somehow labels to share their music to a wider audience.

Unfortunately there is no more party right now, but we got some great club all over the country like Badaboum, Rex Club in Paris, Macadam in Nantes, Le Sucre in Lyon, Baby Club in Marseille and so on…We hope they will recover from this crisis, so the night life can survive.

5.) How have you been keeping busy during lockdown?

Our main job is the distribution, so we are still very busy, music continue to be released and we do our best to provide the best services during the lockdown so every shops and customers can have their dose of quality music ! Unfortunately physical shops has suffered a lot during the lockdown and even if most of them have a webshop, some of them are in great danger, please support them!

6.) What else can we expect from Chat Noir over the next year?

We have a lot of great music coming on our in-house labels from very talented producers and we can’t wait to share them with the public. The growth of our webshop will be a great challenge as well ! So, I guess more music ?
