Discos Nutabe is an electronic music label from Medellín, Colombia. Inaugurated back at the end of 2013, releasing arounds that evoke the universality of House within electronic music, and the very fact of creating it from this city for the city. Championing the fact that those of us who are enthusiasts of this style can also be part of the creation and origin of musical production and its diffusion by promoting community, movement and self-management.

Since 2014, this label embarked on the mission of releasing House from Medellín, with a kind of “Medellin trilogy” lead by label members and collaborators from throughout the years such as DCM, Dijon Traithlon and Vandel. “Orígenes” was our first release by DCM, where the artist took inspiration from the fundamental elements of North American House with nuances of New York Deep and Chicago Jack. Such influences are present in Daniel’s artistic intention with “Swing”, “6 AM” and “Esperaándote”. At the time there was a movement in the city with the adoption of vinyl by many local DJs in the city, thus being able to play their icons on vinyl.

Interview With DCM

Your track “Swing” is finally getting a digital release after being vinyl-only for so long. How does it feel to have this music available to a wider audience?
Releasing my track and the whole EP on vinyl held deep significance for me, as I’d only been producing for a short time and very few people knew my music during that specific period. Now, after a decade of evolution in both my style and as an artist, it’s exciting to revisit those early sounds. I’m thrilled that listeners who follow my work can experience and understand those beginnings, connecting with my musical roots and growth over the years.
“Swing” has such a distinct vibe, with nods to classic House influences. Can you tell us a bit about what inspired the track?
The inspiration for the track and EP came largely from the music I was listening to at that time in my life. Detroit, Chicago, New York house and deep house, artists like Glenn Underground, the great Kerri Chandler, Omar S, Mr. Fingers, Ron Trent, and many others were a major influence on me, not only in terms of the music itself but also but also the approach to its creation and the cultural movement that grew around it.
You’ve been part of the Medellín House scene for years. What makes this community special for you as an artist?
The house scene in Medellín, unfortunately, is currently at a low point, largely because major festivals are directed towards more commercial music styles. We’re also experiencing a generational shift, not only in Colombia but globally, where more marketable genres are taking the spotlight. Despite this, I believe better times are coming soon!
I hold a deep appreciation for the city and its scene as its collectives, labels, clubs supported me and helped me grow as both a DJ and an artist. As a result of this entire journey, I also had the chance to meet incredible people whom I now consider close friends.
How has your sound evolved since the original release of “Swing”? Any new influences or styles you’re exploring?
Over the past decade as a producer, I have undergone a significant musical evolution. During the pandemic, I even created a new alias, Donnie Cosmo, under which I continue to explore house music in its broadest sense. This project allows me to experiment with more diverse and daring sounds while still preserving some of the roots from my beginnings. As part of this journey, I’ve released several vinyl records on various European labels and launched my own label, Shuffle Valley, which has 11 releases to date. We’re set to celebrate our first vinyl release and the label’s 5th anniversary in 2025.
If you could describe the essence of your music in three words, what would they be?
Groovy, energetic and dynamic.
