Cairo’s MÖW has been honing his unique house sound for almost a decade and always with an organic quality that has stood him apart. He has played plenty of the world’s best clubs/festivals, and his music is never far away from the taste-making record bags of top-tier DJs. We sat down with MÖW following the release of his debut drop on notable Afro House imprint, connected.
MÖW, welcome to Music Is 4 Lovers! How’s your summer been?
Hello, thank you for having me. All good and everything is fine, it’s been an intense summer full of production and new music projects alongside my work as an engineer. I’m glad to end it with my debut EP on one of my favourite Afro House labels, ‘Connected’; stay tuned for more upcoming releases this year and early next year.
This month, you’re making your connected debut with the five-track EP, ‘Mwenda’. Could you give us a deep-dive into this release?
Absolutely! ‘Mwenda’ is a project that’s really close to my heart. The name itself is derived from a Congolese word meaning “traveler” or “adventurer”, which perfectly encapsulates the journey I went through while creating this EP. Each track explores different facets of Afro-inspired electronic music, blending traditional African rhythms with modern electronica, I’ve been able to experiment and push boundaries, creating something that feels both authentic and innovative. I’m glad that it’s out to the world via such a reputable label. The EP encompasses a variety of moods, from upbeat dance tracks designed for the club to more introspective, deep melodic tunes. I hope listeners can feel the passion and energy that went into this project.
How would you say your musical style has developed over time?
Regarding my music style, I’ve been developing it for more than 10 years, trying to find my favourite sounds and unique elements, besides I’m not trying to hold to a specific genre, I’ve been producing downtempo, Organic house, Uptempo and Afro house, collaborating with different artists with various music tastes to end up creating something different and unique. I make music that I personally love listening to, testing it in all my performances and seeing happy people enjoying it. My sound is mainly oriented towards mixing organic and world music elements with synths/house beats; this has led me to create a unique fusion sound that aims to take listeners on a global journey. My production techniques have also become more refined, allowing me to better articulate my vision.
As an artist who blends an array of global sounds, who stands out as your biggest influence and why?
There are so many incredible artists who have inspired me, but I’d have to say the amazing artist, ’Sébastien Léger’. This man can really touch and inspire me in all his productions, his music is really unique and he has an amazing taste, he knows how to make the music talk through his catchy melodies. Every single track by him is a true journey, and emotional to the extent that it touches your soul from the very first time you listen to it.
You’re currently based in Cairo, what can you tell our readers about Egypt’s dance music scene?
Cairo’s dance music scene is incredibly vibrant and diverse. There’s a palpable sense of community here, with artists and fans alike passionate about pushing the boundaries of what dance music can be. From underground clubs to open-air festivals in many places (Pyramids for example), there’s always something exciting happening. The scene is a melting pot of influences—traditional Egyptian sounds mixed with the latest global trends. There’s also a burgeoning movement of young artists who are bringing fresh perspectives and energy. It’s an exciting time to be involved in the scene, and I’m thrilled to be a part of it.
What’s your favourite track to spin during DJ sets right now and why?
My favorite track to spin during my DJ sets so far is ‘Ya Habayeb’. This track is coming out on the amazing Sabo’s label, ‘Sol Selectas’, early next year. It has also been remixed by my friend and amazing producer, ‘Hot Oasis’; it’s one of my favorite tracks so far, combining an old Egyptian vocal poem with uptempo organic house beats and solid grooves. I get goosebumps in every time I drop it like I’m listening for the first time; I made it 2 years ago! My friend Sabo and I have been playing it all over the world, and we’ve received a lot of positive reactions and feedback about it. I can’t wait to share this one with you.
As we head into autumn, where can we expect to see you playing?
I’m currently getting ready to perform at one of the biggest festivals in the Middle East, ‘Chill Oposite’, held next month in Dahab, Egypt. The lineup includes, many international and local artists, with names such as: ‘Sabo, Safar, Anatolian Sessions, Unders, Fair Play, Super Flu and Paax (Tulum)’. I hope to see you all there!
