We sit down with Australian DJ and producer Sir Winston to celebrate his forthcoming ‘Perfectly Numb Remix’ release on Playup. We discuss his musical style, what shaped his musical path and more…

Whats good and bad in your world right now?

Music is good. Summer is good. Workload is epic. No complaints though.

About your style/aims when it comes to DJing  – Are you someone who likes to get people in a trance, or who likes a sense of fun in their sets, or who likes to shock?

Possibly shock – in a sexy way. Definitely fun – a euphoric ecstatic festival fun.

And where is your best environment? A small dark club or a huge outdoor festival stage? Late at night for the weirdos or early so you can play slow and eclectic?

I’m a late night weirdo so they are my people and some of my best nights ever were in a small dark club. But I’m working towards a festival stage. The new mixes have a real festival vibe to them and that’s what I’m listening to.  I love to create big moments of mayhem and chaos.

And when making music, what are your aims, what sounds are you most fond of, what is the aim of your tunes?

I like to have a theme to my music and I write about personal experiences. The new EP is called Démons à Combattre which means Demons to Fight in French and I wrote most of it whilst living in Paris last year, so there is a French theme throughout. But as we move forward with the remixes and working on new tracks its headed in a more festival direction. I still want my set to be dark and sexy full of big drops. I’m most fond of obscure tracks that I find that really drive hard, but still have something sexy and dark to them. I’m enjoying taking risks and trying different things out in my sets more and more.

Tell us about your new one for for playup and what the aim was?

I wanted the remix to maintain the Bloghouse era throwback that the EP version has but to really bounce and move a room. It’s called Perfectly Numb which is about a self-induced state where there is no return and you just have to ride out the moment. I wanted a remix that would be perfect to listen to in that perfectly numb moment.

Why and when did you start in music? What got you into it?

I started young. I got my first guitar when I was 11. I’d played piano for a few years before that. My first band played The Velvet Underground and The Doors and my twin brother was on drums. My walls were covered with posters of Hendrix, Zeppelin, John Lennon and Bob Dylan when I was a kid. I loved how songs by Dylan and Lennon spoke of such pure ideals full of love and hope. I was also really into heavy rock music and I loved playing guitar and putting together Marshall stack amplifiers and playing loud as fuck. I was very drawn to music young and I knew I wanted to devote my life to it. When I started writing songs I realized that I could say whatever I wanted and communicate better through music. Music has always been therapy to me – it’s like an old best friend that is always there – reliable and faithful. Music helps me get through life. When I was older, I started clubbing and partying and then I discovered dance music. It was more of a lifestyle thing that took me towards dance and electronic music.

What future projects are you working on?

Still working on another remix for a track on the EP and constantly working on my DJ set. We start recording again in September so I’m writing and putting together references for the next round of sessions. I’m currently travelling across Europe DJing and going to a lot of shows and gigs. I haven’t found the theme to the new project yet but I’m close.

what was the last tune you heard that made you go wow?

Jungle by Fred Again. The vocal and the lyrics are fucking killer and then it drops into super fat synths. His production is really interesting too.
