Kim Ann Foxman is an adopted New Yorker, as she puts it, a celebrated vocalist and underground electronic music DJ who also happens to run her own label, Firehouse, and let’s be real here, rocks in the fashion world too. Few artists out there are as versatile in the music world as she is and fortunate for Los Angeles, she will be joining us for a very special performance. This weekend, Saturday the 24th, a collaboration event by the name of Telepathic Octopus will take place between our site MI4L (featuring Jon Dadon), and Making Shapes founder Jeniluv. The venue will be LA’s hottest pop-up club, No Filter and the hours will be 10PM-late

In heavy anticipation of  her performance, we chatted a bit with Kim Ann Foxman and asked her about her upbringing, her favorite tracks to DJ at the moment and about LA. Remember, you can see Kim perform this Saturday at No Filter in Hollywood this Saturday!

Interview with Kim Ann Foxman

Where are you from and where did you grow up?

I grew up in Honolulu, Hawaii.

What were your early years in music like?

Did you know from an early age that music was going to be your career path? I grew up listening to a lot of RnB, Latin freestyle, radio hip hop and dance pop.  I later got into underground music.  I had no idea I would ever get to work in the music industry. That world seemed so far away from life in Hawaii.

How would you describe the music you make and the music you DJ?

The music that I dj is pretty jacking, underground, moody and even ravey — very classic aesthetic house and techno vibes. When I make music I’m in a much broader range. I make everything from more chill sing-a-along songs to dancey deep and jacking stuff.  I don’t really like to be boxed into one category or one genre.

Who are some of your favorite artists at the moment? Labels?

For some new current stuff,  I like Steffi, Virginia, Paranoid London,  Maya Jane Coles, Bicep, Eli Escobar, Citizen, Matt Tolfrey, Simoncino, and Trus’me.  As for labels: L.I.E.S.  Ostgut Ton , Needwant, Love Fever, Aus, Jackathon and Feel My Bicep.

How do you like LA? Is it somewhere you have visited much? What are some of your favorite things about playing in the city?

I like LA. I visit a lot. I used to live in SF, and so many of my friends from there now live in LA so I have fun visiting them. I like that there is lots of good food. It’s a nice lifestyle, nice weather… I like it all, besides the traffic part. I love the whole Cali vibe in general.

Anything special in the works you would like your audience to know about?

I’m about to put out my 2nd release on my new label, Firehouse on March 9th! keep the ears and eyes peeled! It will also be available on wax.

What are 3 tracks your currently playing in your sets?

Trus’me- I Want You
