We caught up with Norwegian duo Of Norway to chat about their new ‘Sunflower’ EP on the vital Miami imprint Do Not Sit On The Furniture Recordings.
__
This is your first time back to Do Not Sit On the Furniture recordings since your EP ‘Sorry for sitting on your furniture!’ What has changed since then?

Since then we’ve been keeping our distance by sitting on as much furniture as humanly possible for two pandemic years. Probably not unlike others, we’ve been making tons of music and got some good releases out of the crisis. Vegard has gotten engaged, and is now professionally hiding in the studio, 24/7. On a serious note though, we’ve spent the pandemic re-modelling and upgrading the studio a little…

The pandemic has changed alot of our lives and how we now work and create. Has your methods changed since the world reopened and if so how so?

During the pandemic there have been months of lock down in Norway, so we’ve been forced to find methods of working over the internet. Which kind of is a blessing in disguise for us, as this means we have more up-time in the studio than before the pandemic. We utilise an app/plugin from Audiomovers called “Listen To” to stream the projects, along with ip calls for video and talking. So now we can work even when on holidays or for any other reasons we can’t physically meet up.

This EP sounds incredibly organic. Did you play some of the instruments, or did you go crate digging for samples, or both?

We haven’t used any samples at all. The brass on Sunflower, is a Halion patch. The live sounding drums on Scheffeli are programmed via virtual drummer, some bass is played by Chris, the vox is a Halion library, and the rest is synths.

What were you listening to when making this EP?

The sketches for these tracks have been accumulated over years, so we’ve been listening to everything under the sun.

What I love about this EP is that it is something that you could listen to in any environment but also you could play in a club. Was this the intention?

We try to just make music we like, not really bothering about where it will make an impact. Sometimes it’s DJ friendly music, sometimes it’s not. These 3 tracks were chosen especially for Do Not Sit On The Furniture to fit their aesthetics, which to us is exactly what you have described above; music that works across different settings and arenas.

You guys are known to explore a vast range of different styles. What’s next for you guys?

Ambient Schranz… Fast Oslo Disco… Brutal Yacht Rock… Who knows… we never really plan for a genre.

I have seen you guys have done a mix for fabric before. Do you have any plans to play in the UK in the near future?

Since the beginning of the pandemic we’ve been between agents, and thus sadly have nothing planned at the moment. We want to re-structure, to have both a DJ setup and a live act under the name “Of Norway” – We would absolutely love to play in the UK again, and hope to find a suitable agent / agency to start touring again soon. Until then you can reach out to book us directly through our SoMe.

What is your favourite club to play in?

Our absolute favourite gig ever has been Fabric / London. But we have a super special place in our heart for Kater Blau in Berlin – which we’ve played since they were called Bar 25.

Who was your favourite artist growing up?

Vegard: Iron Maiden and the Amiga Demo Scene music.

Chris: Sonic Youth and Nirvana.

Lastly name 5 artists to watch out for in 2022!

Hard to name drop, but here’s a few from the top of our heads:

Macho Cutie!
Dogstare
Franz Scala
Fabrizio Mammarella
Josh Caffe
