We previously covered the static new EP from New York City-based artist Mike Nasty, who offered up a sure toned release that has driven the summer season. Well to top it off we had Mike sit down for a quick interview to discuss further and some insight to the artists mind;

Hey Mike! Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you get into music, and how long have you been producing music?

Hey! How’s it going? My father actually got me into music at a young age. I grew up watching my father make beats and play guitar, which was the first instrument I was introduced to. I later got into alto saxophone in the 6th grade and played all the way up until 12th grade. I’ve been producing music for roughly 20 years now. My earliest releases were Hip-Hop beats and freestyles that I would put on my Myspace page.
What motivates your work as an artist?

I thoroughly enjoy seeing the way music makes someone feel. From the look on their face to the way their body moves, this is a genuinely good moment all around. Music can be a get away from worldly problems for a lot of people.

What’s your sound? My sound is a bit of Jazz, Gospel and R&B influence wrapped up in House music. I feel like my music evokes certain emotions that can pull on the heart strings.

Are there any artists who are currently inspiring your work?

I’ve always been inspired by the likes of Stevie Wonder, Mary J. Blige, Kerri Chandler, Khruangbin and Yussef Dayes just to name a few.

Walk us through the inspiration behind your latest EP, Deep South EP?

Deep South is a homage to my humble beginnings in Memphis, TN and my upbringing in southern culture of the United States. The project shows that there are Dance music artists who are cultivating sounds in smaller markets that aren’t known for having an underground scene. You can hear the south’s influence of Gospel, R&B and Jazz all throughout the EP.

If you could name one thing, what’s something you’re particularly proud of since starting this journey?

I’ve been proud of my ability to curate nightlife events at a high level in New York City. Whether it’s a Hip-Hop party or a Dance music event, I’m able to draw out some of the most diverse crowds to gather in one place and enjoy all of these genres of music.

Anything else you’d like to share?

I’m truly excited for what’s to come in my career. I intend on sharing my sound and talents globally. Whether it’s Europe, Asia, South America or Australia, I plan to be out there soon playing the music I love most.

The “Deep South EP” is out now!
