Italian-based duo Bohos have burst onto the house scene with the release of ‘Love Me’, their debut EP out on Adesso Music earlier this month. The duo, comprised of Lorenzo and Frederico who previously worked together as WAMI, sat down with us to discuss the new release, their Café Mambo competition win and more.

Hey Bohos and welcome to Music is 4 Lovers! Where are you both currently and how has your year been so far?

Hey there, Bohos here! We’re based in Italy and although our year has had its ups and downs we’re starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel, thanks to the release of our single “Love Me” on Adesso. However, the true turning point this year was when we won the contest for Cafe Mambo. In fact, we had the honor of performing in Ibiza at the iconic venue, and it was an unforgettable experience. So, if we were to rate our year, we’d give it a solid 8.5. To reach a perfect 10, we know we’d need to work hard; we can’t wait to achieve even more success in the future (but the year is not finished!)

You have a new release out on Adesso Music, ‘Love Me’. What can you tell us about this record?

‘Love Me’ is a track that emerged from our desire to emphasize the meaning of love. When we stumbled upon the vocal sample in a library, we thought, ‘why not build the entire song around this phrase?’ In fact, if you listen to the chorus, there’s another vocal saying “come back,” which further underscores our creative vision. We wanted to use these vocals to drive home our message and create a song that really speaks to the essence of love.

This is your first release as a Bohos. How has the experience been and what have you learned from working together?

We owe a lot to Adesso Music; they provided us with the opportunity to release our first single and step into the world of the music industry. Our relationship with Adesso started some time ago when we had the chance to meet Geoff in a bar in Amsterdam. He shared Adesso’s vision with us, and we wholeheartedly embraced it. We want to be a part of this family, and we’re deeply grateful for the opportunity they’ve given us to achieve great things together.

Who is someone within your scene that is a real inspiration to your work?

As a duo, we bring together a diverse set of influences that merge into a unique sound. Lorenzo draws inspiration from artists like Deadmau5, Alesso, and Avicii, while Federico’s roots are deeply embedded in the electronic sounds of Porter Robinson, Madeon, and Avicii. The name of the project “Bohos” finds its origin in “Bohemian,” symbolizing an unconventional lifestyle and a free spirit that draws inspiration from simplicity, nature, and esoteric symbols. That’s why we’re exploring a house and Afro house style that aligns with the essence of our name, aiming to encapsulate the spirit of Bohemian living in our music. If we had to pick two names for mentors though, we would definitely say Keinemusik and Black Coffee.

As mentioned earlier, you both recently won the Café Mambo x Absolut DJ Competition for 2023 – congratulations! How was it having a masterclass with Jason Bye and winning the award in general?

The words to describe what unfolded during the masterclass fall short of fully capturing the profound impact it had on us. Those days will forever remain etched in our artistic and personal journey. Jason is an exceptional individual who immediately took us under his wing. We listened to his words with great care and, above all, with profound respect for an icon who has so much to teach us.

Meeting the entire Cafe Mambo team, there was a real sense of unity among the artists, promoters, and individuals. It created an electrifying atmosphere and resulted in an unforgettable memory. It motivates us to redouble our efforts in our productions and in our lives, with the hope of experiencing similar situations again.

We were originally scheduled to perform a one-hour set, but in the end, we played for an hour and a half into the afternoon. Jason was so impressed by our set that he asked if we were willing to play again in the evening. We didn’t hesitate for a moment and said yes. He showered us with compliments throughout, and we hope to return to the booth to perform once more because, believe us, it’s a unique and magical place unlike any we’ve ever played before.

What is a track from this year that you’ve had on repeat?

The Rapture by Keinemusik and Black Coffee is the track of the year for us.

Finally, what else can we expect from Bohos this year?

Bohos is always in motion. We started with a burning desire to become the best, and we know that it takes hard work to achieve that goal. We’re fully aware that there’s a lot of music to share with everyone, as we want to leave a lasting impression.
