KIKO provided some of the tracks of 2019 for us on the acclaimed, Stil Vor Talent imprint as part of the Last Trip compilation. The french talent also just finished a tour of discovery in the interesting space of India, playing several gigs in main cities, learning about the scene and culture. Check out our conversation below…
How has the start of 2020 been for you? Have you been producing much? 2020 started really well with tours over Australia & now in India, surrounded by European shows. Had a release on Eleatics rec. including a remix from OC & VERDE. As about production, I have been on tour a bit too much to be very productive but I’m taking almost all April off to do new music & originals.
The tail end of last year saw you release on Still Vor Talent as part of their ‘Last Trip’ compilation, how did your relationship with Still Vor Talent come about? In the beginning we did a remix for Hatzler that contacted me to remix his track for the label together with my buddy Citizen Kain. Then I start sending some demos to Oliver and looks like he liked it 🙂 They even invited me to play in the end of December at their event in Berlin happening at Ritter Butzke. Which was great!
Your ‘Echoes of Light’ track shows maybe a different side to you, is their a story behind this track? Yes, in the beginning I had in mind to produce a new album since my last album was in 2006 already. This track was part of the album, as a real album track, not too dancefloor but with more sensibility inside. Echoes of Light was supposed to be the album title and this track, the opening track of the album. Since Stil Vor Talent was really interested in releasing this track, then I decided to split the album’s tracks to different labels and different EPs.
We would love to hear more about your studio processes and the set up you are using? I’m using cubase since 25 years now, so I know this platform pretty well 🙂
I am using a lot my Moog sub 37 & Arturia plugins.
As about my production process, it’s a bit special, as I’m a TV addict, and so comes sometimes ideas that I try to repeat in the studio. I always start with the melodic side of the track and then once the melody is done, I’m buIlding the track & bass around the melody itself.
You have released on many amazing labels in your time, which label would be your dream label to release on? Indeed, I have released on a lot of labels along the years that were in their time the top labels to release on, and I can only thank all the artists and labels that trusted me along the years. Actually, if I have only 1 to chose, I guess that would be to release one day on Afterlife.
You are about to head to India for a tour, what are you looking forward to the most about visiting this part of the world? I am actually in India already, replying this interview 🙂
I am taking time in between of Sawai (visiting Ranthambore national Park) & Agra (visiting Taj Mahal) with no internet connexion !
I already played Goa/Chronicle & Locals District festival in Jaipur last weekend that were totally amazing about the venues, hosting & crowd.
Indian peoples and crowd are incredibly kind and nice, I can’t wait for the second weekend of tour between cities of Hyderabad, Delhi & Bangalore!
What do you have planned for this year? There are a couple of things already planned but also some that I still think about.
9th of march there is a re-release of 4 old tracks of mine on Suara from 2003-2005 period. This is a bit special as Suara never did that kind of thing ever before. So I’m pretty curious about how will react the crowd with this stuff released first more than 15 years ago !
I also still have this new album idea in my head that I’m digging. Also I still have in my mind since a long time the idea to launch a new label. Let’s see what will show up in 2020 then 🙂
What was your favourite gig of all time? If I have to chose only 1 show over all my career I would pick this one in Kazantip in 2010. It was still very unknown festival, no dj announced, right on the beach, beautiful peoples, amazing energy. It was out of this world. I took 15 days to come back down to earth! 🙂
What is your favourite song right now?
Actually i don’t have 1 but 2 tracks that are in all my sets. First one is the track from Mathame « for every forever » and second one is a new one we produced together with my buddy Citizen Kain that works so well on the crowd, called Poncho Villa 🙂
