With multiple Billboard Hot 100s, 100 million+ streams and 50+ Beatport Top 100s Hume Audio has been elevating audio across the entire musics-here since 2017. Alexander Hume [Hume Audio] specializes in analog and digital audio mastering, mixing, production, tutoring, and editing. I also have a thorough understanding of recording, arranging, sound design, video game audio, live sound, performance, and dialogue.

1. How did you first get into audio engineering/mastering?

I’ve been producing and engineering since I was <13, first playing around in Audacity, FL, and Garageband. I was always drawn to the intricacies of music and how it made me feel. As a teenager, I started playing around with the MiniKorg, a Novation launchpad, and Ableton, experimenting with mixing and mastering tracks and trying to understand the magic behind it all. I was a part of my High School’s beatmaking club and was obsessed with all aspects of audio. I’ve always had diverse musical interests, but dance music was a huge driving force for my passion for audio, particularly the engineering side. (Some electronic artists I was into at this time [and still am ] included A-Trak, Booka Shade, Crystal Castles, Daft Punk, Deadmau5, Eprom, SBTRKT, and Justice)

After working a few service jobs after High School, I realized this could be more than just a hobby. I was captivated by the process of shaping sound and making it sound the best it possibly could. The idea of being able to enhance the emotional impact of music through mastering was particularly fascinating to me.

I decided to pursue formal education in audio engineering and enrolled at Evergreen State College in their renowned music production program. During this time I started working for a local dance music publication, doing production writing and event coverage. These were pivotal moments in my journey, as they provided me with a solid foundation in the business and technical aspects of music and audio engineering. In school I learned about modular/synthesis, mixing consoles, live sound, signal processing, acoustics, and the art of mastering. I also was mentored by several prestigious engineers towards the end of my degree to supplement the education I received at college.

Over the years, I continued to build my expertise, working on tons of my friends’ tracks and started getting clients. Eventually, I founded Hume Audio, my own audio engineering business. My goal has always been to help artists achieve the best possible sonic quality for their music, allowing their artistic vision to shine through. It’s a constant journey of learning and exploration, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to work with talented musicians and contribute to the world of audio.

2. Do you also produce music, I saw you have an artist alias Hume?

I produce as EMUH which is Hume backwards! I always incorporate my own vocals and I don’t define my music by a particular genre, instead opting to rely on themes of dance, introspection, and the ostinato. As a neurodivergent person, my ideal method of communication and connection—of showing my true self—is through my music. In a modern scene that continues to celebrate excess over substance, quantity over quality, and image over authenticity, EMUH is honed to the true values that built dance music culture. These values are an extension of myself – I pour them into all of my creative work, including my engineering!

3. If you could engineer/master any artist’s work in the world, who would it be?

So hard to pick one! Here are some artists on my mind recently that I’d love to engineer:
Animal Collective, Ardalan, Benee, Cr1tter, Dirty Projectors, Drive45, The Gorillaz, James Blake, Jay Eazy, MGMT, Seb Wildblood, Still Woozy, Tame Impala, Tessa Violet, and Walker & Royce
