Celebrating the launch of his Mishbaka label, later this month Fireberg delivers his Call Of The Phoenix EP, featuring three tracks touching on transformation and renewal and remixes from Scott Diaz + Prince Of Queens. Like the myth referenced in the title, each track is reincarnated as traditional radio edits or remixed into new evolutions. Ahead of the EP’s release, we invited Fireberg to pick out ten of his favourite tracks, enjoy!

1. Cochemea – Mitote

Tracks like this remind me to keep in mind the origins of human musical creation. Just drums and melody. There’s a part of me that longs for pads and bass but I can also just appreciate how full it is while being completely raw.

2. Yamil – Amaru

Yamil brings the Amazonian sound into the 21st century without relying on “tribal” tropes. I like the freedom in the vocal part and the blend of haunting and uplifting melodic ideas.

3. Nils Frahm – Sunson

With this track, Nils combines orchestral textures and motifs with drone, improvisation and components of house music, albeit at a slightly slower tempo. It says, to me, it’s OK to take your time developing the feelings and ideas that make up this experience.

4. J Gabriel & Mojo District – Lovetrack

J Gabriel is a master of unique, hifi and euphonic sound design. I love the vibrations of the two main chord stabs (which is way too violent a word for these cozy sounds). Also, shout out to Onysia Records which is a local Brooklyn establishment!

5. Shirley Horn – Return to Paradise (Mark De Clive-Lowe Remix)

I used to listen to this album all the time before I even knew what house music was. I grew up playing jazz standards, so hearing these classic producers give their take, adding that confident, clear and driving beat underneath was infectious.

6. Ian Pooley – What’s Your Number (Jazzanova Renumber)

A more contemporary application of jazzy house. I love the drum break on this. Grimy but not lo-fi, per se. Great vocal sample too!

7. GoGo Penguin – Atomised (Machinedrum Remix)

Verging on acid jazz, the energy in this track is anxious in all the best ways. I’ve been taking a little Theanine with my coffee recently, which really mellows out the jitters… It’s kind of like that 🙂

8. Four Tet – Angel Echoes

Four Tet helped ease my transition from downtempo into dancefloor tempos as his career kind of has followed a similar pathway. This track is really beautiful and it’s kind of just a deep build that never drops, and yet it’s satisfying and relaxing at the same time.

9. Kraftwerk – Tour de France (Etape 1)

How to choose one track from Kraftwerk!? All their work is so profound. But, one thing I noticed while listening to this is how all the sounds, though familiar in the current club scene, sound so homemade, direct from the machines (as compared to samples or VSTs).

10. Kessler – Hood Mentality

Drum and bass has been a budding interest of mine for the past year or so, though it hasn’t made it fully into the production yet. I got my start in live performance as a reggae keyboardist, so I resonate deeply with the sounds of ragga and dub.
