Dance Spirit Unveil “Ceremony,” the Next Chapter From Forthcoming Album Lunatic

Los Angeles electronic duo Dance Spirit continue their return with “Ceremony,” the second single from their forthcoming sophomore album, Lunatic, arriving August 28 via their independent imprint, Koukan.

Following comeback single “Tranquilized & Hypnotized,” which marked Christopher Mohn and Reagan Denius’ first new music together in six years, “Ceremony” shifts the focus firmly toward the dance floor. Ritualistic percussion, hypnotic grooves and soaring melodic textures drive the track through melodic techno and progressive house territory. For Mohn, the release represents an important transition within the wider narrative of Lunatic.

“I think ‘Ceremony’ moves the story of the Lunatic album forward by finally hitting a pace in the journey where the dance floor is activated,” says Mohn. “It seemed like the right follow-up after the downtempo atmosphere of ‘Tranquilized & Hypnotized.’ As experimental as we can get with our creativity and musicianship, at the heart of what we do are grooves and rhythms for the dance floor.”

Rather than arriving alone, “Ceremony” is presented as a three-track package that offers two additional interpretations from the individual creative worlds of Dance Spirit’s members.

Under his solo project King Freak, Mohn delivers the “Beauty Dub,” steering “Ceremony” into deeper territory through stripped-back grooves, reimagined percussion and expansive sound design.

The release is rounded out by Reagan Denius’ Robotek Reagan project with “Dream A Better Way (Dancing Through The Void Mix).” The track reworks another composition from the forthcoming album with new harmonies, vocal elements and driving, peak-time energy, providing an early glimpse at another corner of the Lunatic universe.

The idea of ceremony itself also reflects the duo’s philosophy around the dance floor and the communal experience at the heart of their music.

“I see parties as a kind of ceremony, where we come together to celebrate life, dance to the voice of the universe, and connect more deeply with ourselves and each other,” Reagan says. “‘Ceremony’ captures the experience we’re trying to create on the dance floor: transcendent awareness and connection. There’s no better way to celebrate our return after six years than with this song.”

The release continues a comeback story six years in the making. Dance Spirit completed Lunatic shortly before the pandemic, but the album remained unreleased as the duo stepped away from the project. Rather than revisiting and modernizing the record following their reunion, Mohn and Denius ultimately chose to release the body of work as it was originally created.

Due September 25, the 11-track multimedia album pairs each composition with an original visual work and marks a new independent chapter for Dance Spirit. The record will be released through their own imprint, Koukan, whose name draws from the Japanese concept of sympathetic resonance.
