Contributing WriterSalon Records launches its Summer Series with three singles from electronic mainstays Bruno Pronsato, Matthew Dear and Rework. While each artist occupies a distinct corner of electronic music, they share a gift for blurring the lines between songwriting, dance music and leftfield pop. Here, they draw on minimal, house and melodic influences while blending dancefloor energy with more reflective moods. The EPs are accompanied by a visual campaign by French photographer Paul Rousteau and creative studio Playground. Paris, which extends the collection’s Mediterranean-inspired aesthetic with sun-drenched imagery and vivid, acid-soaked colour.
American Bruno Pronsato is a master of minimal and micro house and a 20+ year veteran with a well-regarded catalogue on cult labels like Perlon, Hello? Repeat and Logistic Records. He kicks off the series with his two-track EP, starting with ‘Is Anybody Up Straight Up’, a woozy late-night rhythm with hazy vocals, shifting synth tones and glitchy percussion sprinkled in from above. ‘Shelly Play The Bells (You Nasty Thing)’ slows to a dubby crawl with muttered vocals and diffuse chords warming things like the first rays from a morning sun.
Legendary musical shapeshifter and Ghostly International co-founder Matthew Dear continues the series with ‘New Drug’, an electro-pop, sun-soaked anthem driven by catchy hooks and subtle low-rider vibes reminiscent of War. On the B-side, ‘Head in the Clouds’ unfolds as a long, floating journey through hazy disco atmospheres and hypnotic grooves.
Lastly, celebrated Playhouse outfit Rework aka German trio Daniel Varga, Michael Kuebler and Sascha Hedgehog, heats up the warmest hours of summer with two tracks: ‘Boring’ is a laid-back, slow-burning deep house cut elevated by elegant piano arrangements, lazy drums and signature indie female vocals steeped in detached melancholy. Subtle yet effective, it’s built to keep dancefloors moving while ‘You Give It Up’ drifts into Indian summer territory – a floating, hypnotic journey through psychedelic grooves and imaginary beaches somewhere in Goa.
