He may have relatively few releases to his name, but Boogie Café’s latest signing, Piers Kirwan, is no fresh-faced newcomer. Kirwan first rose to prominence in the first decade of the century as one half of Clubstar and Defected-promoted duo Stereo Mutants, before deciding to focus on solo productions and remixes back in 2012. Since then, Kirwan has built a reputation on the electronic underground as a producer of quality house music. With solo projects on Grant Nelson’s Freeze Dried label, King street and Vibe Boutique. He took his Boogie Café bow five years ago via a much-played remix of Chezz’s ‘Good Things’.

On the Dialogue EP, Kirwan’s first solo set for almost three years, the long-serving producer aptly showcases his musical dexterity via a quartet of cuts rich in sassy deep house sounds, tactile motifs, great grooves and some seriously emotive vocal samples.

Interview with Piers Kirwan

1.) Tell us a bit about yourself and your background in music, who is Piers Kirwan?

I have been a dj for 30 years and producer for 20 years , i started production as one half of stereo mutants with afro/soulful releases on Defected, Clubstar, Bubble Soul and remixes on Soulphuric records etc. My solo stuff started in 2010 with remixes on vibe boutique, king street, boogie cafe and originals on freeze dried, deep deluxe etc.

2.) Tell about your new EP on Boogie Cafe.

The ep for boogie cafe was all produced in lockdown as i had loads of time on my hands , 2 of the tracks are broken beat genre , which i am loving that style at the moment and the other 2 deep house tracks which I’m most known for doing , there’s no real history about the tracks , they are just ideas i had in my head 😉

3.) Who are your greatest influences as an artist?

Louie Vega is my favourite dj/producer for house. His chords and emotion are what I love about his music productions.

LTJ Bukem is a massive influence ,when i first started out , i have a lot of love for liquid dnb , which i dj in the 90/00 along side house.

Disclosure, I love their style when they are more underground,  amazing production and musically my style.

4.) Please tell us about the electronic scene in Newquay. What artists do you love past and present that have inspired and encouraged you and what parties that you love going to have helped your musical evolution.

Newquay has a great musical back ground , and still to this day there are selective nights to go too which rock , clubs like the bowgie , jesters and tall trees is where i started my dj journey , we have had so many massive names dj in cornwall over the years like carl cox , LTJ Bukem, John Digweed/Sasha etc which i had the pleasure to warm up for.

5.) How have you been keeping busy during lockdown?

Writing music is all I have done in lockdown.

6.) What else can we expect from Piers Kirwan over the next year?

I have 4 track ep coming on (last forever records) in jan which is turbojazz label in italy, and a load more releases I’m just finishing up.

-Piers Kirwan
