Oldrich Sic Jr. talks to us about his top tracks, what inspires his music production and the latest remix release on MYR

The ability to hold a DJ residencies and continually produce attention-grabbing music is no easy feat. Having held many club and radio residences since 1997 and releasing on Revolucion Records and MYR, it’s safe to say Oldrich Sic Jr.’s ability to deliver quality club tracks and remixes speaks for itself.

Ahead of his upcoming gigs and after the recent release of a remix package of his hard-hitting release “Well” on MYR, we wanted to catch up with Oldrich Sic Jr. to find out what inspires his music, insight into his top tracks and get the lowdown on this latest release (previews below).

1. Hi Oldrich, thanks for catching up with us today. How are preparations going for your upcoming gig at Gogo Klub this month?

Hi guys! Thanks for having me.

I am prepping a little bit for playing at GoGo, but at the end of the day – I tailor gigs depending on the atmosphere of the night – that’s a super important aspect of doing this kind of gig.

Gogo club and I have history – I’ve been hanging out there since I was 14, so I definitely have a strong connection to the place and feel super comfortable and ‘at home’.

2. What other performances do you have coming up and are there any particular dates we should keep an eye out for?

There are a few gigs coming up actually! But I’m really stoked about Chapeau Rogue Prage – ELEKTRO//NISCHE on 16 Nov.

Not only is it my 40th birthday (eek!), but I’ve also invited an excellent techno-producer – I AM BAM (Terminal M, Suara, Quartz). We’ll run the show together and I can’t wait.

What a way to spend a birthday. RAVE ON.

3. With all of your live performances and history of being a well-established resident for venues, what are your current top five tracks when playing out?

That’s a tricky one. There are so many great tracks out there. Again, it really depends on the night and the venue, but some examples of my favourites are:

DEL-30 – WHP [Sola]

Marco Bailey – Kiev [1605]

Adam Beyer & Bart Skils – Your Mind [Drumcode]

ARTBAT & Dino Lenny – Sand In Your Shoes [Diynamic Music]

at least that’s the few that sprung to mind.

4. The track record you have for holding down residencies over the course of your career is no easy feat. How have you found balancing studio time with regularly playing out?

Well, in my opinion, the weekends are for gigs. School-nights are for relaxing and thinking about new music. Time to explore, use gained experiences for new things.. that’s how I see it, anyway.

5. What guidance would you give to a DJ looking to become a club resident?

No idea how to answer that one. Determination gets you everywhere, even tho it might not be easy.

But if you work hard to get where you are, it comes with a great sense of satisfaction, and people at a club will appreciate it. You get what you give but you have to invest that energy first. That’s my advice.

6. Your recent release, ‘Down to Detail’ was well-received on MYR, could you tell us a bit more about the creative process you went through? What equipment was used and what was the inspiration behind the release?

The last remix EP was built on the previous release ‘Down to Detail ́. There was something about it that made me think it could be improved, or end differently.

I got a lot of feedback saying that you ‘can’t do that’, but hey – why not…? There is no right or wrong in this game, and sometimes I can be a bit stubborn.

We discussed it with the CEO of the Label Goeran Meyer and the whole thing got rolling. Also Kaiser Waldon and Goeran doing great work on the remix files – thanks so much to everyone there.

And from a technical point – it’s a lot of 909, Juno 106 and Roland SE on mega bass. The idea was given to us by the universe – whoever does a bit of producing will know what I mean 😉

7. Do you find re-approaching a project, or having another producer remix your work, later on ignites a new spring of inspiration?

I think that everyone has their own way of working/workflows. It’s super inspirational to see things from a different point of view – especially if it’s a new or different way of approaching things, and it definitely inspires me to learn and improve.

8. Could you tell us where you find your inspiration outside of music?

The Universe!

Diving deep. Sometimes I reckon it’s a form of space travel. We still have to learn a lot. So, if you want to understand what’s around you, you gotta dive deep. Even if that means diving into your own consciousness or subconsciousness.

9. And finally, what can we expect from you in the coming months? Do you have any forthcoming projects, exciting gigs or anything you’d like to mention?

There are a few dates coming up – check out my website for details 🙂 but I am very excited about ELECTRIC CAMP #2 next year, but there is some other music-stuff in the making as well… but I won’t tell.. just yet.
