With the release of his single ‘The Day Before You Were Born’ set to drop tomorrow we caught up with Raniero to take a deeper look at this powerful release & more.

MI4L – Your upcoming track, The Day Before You Were Born, is set for release on April 11 via Traumweg Records. How did the label come about?

Raniero – I founded the label in 2018 as a side project of Wachtraum Events London, of which I am a co-founder.

MI4L – The track has a deeply evocative title. What was the inspiration behind it, both musically and conceptually?

Raniero – The title refers to each life before it is born. I usually start by writing down the title, then creating the video clip, and finally composing the music. I know this is an unusual way to create music, but to me, the title of a song is very important. I wrote the title and the video clip script five years ago on a piece of paper, but I composed the music last summer. I waited until August 24, to release the video clip—one day before my birthday

MI4L – Your production style blends emotion with high-energy, peak-time vibes. What was your creative process like in crafting this track?

Raniero – In all my music, you can hear my trance music background, which is the genre I grew up with. This is why my style is very emotional and euphoric.

MI4L – Owen Gray’s remix takes the track in a completely different direction. How did that collaboration come about, and what were your initial thoughts when you first heard his interpretation?

Raniero – I met Owen at ICMP University in London while studying music for film. I’ve always liked his style, and I always prefer to find a remixer who is quite different from my background and genre to give the track a new life.

Raniero – When I first heard his remix, I got goosebumps. He sent me four versions, and I loved all of them, but then I asked him to decide which one he wanted to release.

MI4L – The remix swaps out the driving rhythms for more ambient, experimental textures. How do you feel it complements or contrasts with your original vision?

Raniero – The contrast between the original and the remix is quite strong: different moods and sound palette – apart from the main synthesiser—but at the same time, both tracks lead to the same destination. I believe the remix is a great closing track for a DJ set

MI4L – Since the announcement of the release, what kind of reactions have you received from fans, DJs, and fellow producers?

Raniero – To be honest, when I first exported the demo tracks, I sent them to a few friends and producers. I wasn’t sure about the main melody because it sounded a bit too “mainstream”, but all the feedback I got was: ‘Do not change it. Leave it as it is.

MI4L – Melodic techno is evolving constantly. Where do you see your sound fitting within the genre, and how do you think The Day Before You Were Born contributes to that evolution?

Raniero – I am fully aware that my style is somewhere between melodic techno and trance music, so it’s quite difficult to predict where *The Day Before You Were Born will fit and contribute

MI4L – Many of your tracks carry a strong emotional undercurrent. How important is storytelling in your music, and does this track hold any personal meaning for you?

Raniero – All my music is emotional and deeply personal, from the title to the monologue to the video clips. I would say that my music is like cinéma d’auteur for a film director or screenwriter

MI4L – With this release marking another milestone in your career, what’s next for Raniero? Any upcoming projects, collaborations, or live shows we should know about?

Raniero – I’m still working on an audio-visual live performance to be staged in a theatre, but it takes a long time to rearrange the music, record all the videos, and rehearse.

MI4L – Finally, if you had to describe The Day Before You Were Born in just three words, what would they be?

Raniero – starts. ends. starts.
