Nick Curly offers up the two-track ‘Come Right Back’ EP via his and Marc Scholl’s Cécille Records at the end of March. We had a chance to sit down and chat with Nick ahead of the release;

Q: Hi Nick, welcome to Music Is 4 Lovers, it’s a pleasure to have you on the site. Your new EP is out now on yours and Marc Scholl’s Cécille Records. What does it sound like, when and where did you make it?
Hello,

Thank you very much for the interview. “Come Right Back,” the first song on the EP, expresses pure joy and happiness for me when listening to the track. I wanted to produce a song that is fun, especially in these times; it seemed important to me.

Q: Cécille has been in the game for a long time now, how have you maintained relevance and consistency as a record label and how would you describe the sound of the label past and present?

Yes, it’s true, we’ve been in the game for a while now. But let’s be honest. We took a little break in between. Since the time we decided to come back, it initially seemed like a challenge for Marc and me to rediscover “our” sound. Back in the days when we started, and the media immediately coined the term “Mannheim Sound” for the music we released, it was much easier. But now, especially with the last two releases of D-Stone and Rooleh, and the upcoming releases, we are very happy to have that “old groove” back on the label. It’s what we’re always searching for and what makes us special.

Q: You’re a native Germany, a country which has deep roots in electronic music from Berlin and beyond to Frankfurt and of course your own hometown of Mannheim. Could you tell us about your roots in electronic music? Who were some of the figures that inspired you to take up a career as a producer and DJ of underground electronic music?

That’s right, I was born in Germany and grew up in Mannheim. I now live in Turkey, but in my youth, when I started going to clubs, we would often visit either Frankfurt or Stuttgart, which is between Mannheim. DJs like Sven Väth and Ricardo Villalobos played there regularly and were always a source of inspiration for me. Later, when we started flying to Ibiza, I began listening to international house acts such as Frankie Knuckles, who you couldn’t really hear in Germany. They also inspired me a lot, particularly in the housier side. Eventually, I incorporated elements from both techno from Frankfurt and house into my productions.

Q: What was the last record you bought?

That’s a good question. If you’re asking about vinyl, I must honestly say I can’t remember. I sometimes go classic vinyl digging, but if you’re referring to MP3s, it was Haris – Supadrug.

Q: What’s your favourite physical record store to buy music?

When I was living in Mannheim I used to go to Freebase Record Store in Frankfurt or Humpty Records in Heidelberg. These both where my favourites.

Q: Lastly, tell us of something that’s bringing love into your life in recent times outside of electronic music?

Outside of the music I am focused of course on my family and friends and my 3 dogs which I spent lot ́s of time with every day by walking them outside in the park.
