Sons of Sevilla are blood brothers Henry & Reuben Smith who hail from Featherstone in the North of England. In lockdown Henry visited Reuben to play guitar on a track, and they ended writing this album together! Inspired by JJ Cale records and a lifetime of the music they had heard growing up, they step out with on the hallowed Southern Californian label, Ubiquity Records. Lullabies For A Wildcat is a collection of tracks recorded at their family home in the summer of 2020 with shades of 70s psychedelia, tripped out layered vocals that build a vibration that seems way beyond their years.
Interview With Sons of Sevilla
Thanks for stopping by to chat you guys. Can you introduce yourselves for our readers.
Hey, we are Henry and Reuben Smith, two brothers from Featherstone, small old town in the North of England
What is your connection to Sevilla?
Growing up we spent a lot of time in Sevilla as our parents fell in love with the city. Reuben eventually joined the Sevilla FC youth set up and played out there for a year or so when he was 17. It’s our favourite city in the world.
Did you have an intention in mind when you started out making the album?
We never envisaged we’d make a record the two of us or start a band. The tracks came together during the first lockdown in 2020 probably to help keep us sane and busy. Pretty quickly we had more than enough songs to start thinking about putting an album together.
It sounds very psychedelic Manchester in the 90s – which was an incredibly iconic time – and dare I say Happy Mondays. How do you feel about that reference?
We’re definitely aware that a few tracks on the record have a 90’s Manchester feel. It was unintentional and probably came through on some songs because of our time spent enjoying listening to bands like Stone Roses and Oasis as we were growing up. Our parents and their mates were heavily into the rave scene back in the late 80’s early 90s so we’ve grown up around it. It’s not a sound we’re set on moving forward and you’ll hear that difference in our new album.
When did you first start making the album?
We started writing and recording tracks together in the summer of 2020. It came together pretty fast and was all written and recorded in under 2 months. The tracks on the album are the first tunes we’d ever written together
Who are the artists that have inspired your sound?
We spent a lot of time listening to JJ Cale before, during and after recording our first record. He’s one of our favourite artists
What was most important for you to convey through this album?
We really didn’t try to convey anything, we just wrote tunes that we enjoyed listening back to. Thats it!
What are you most proud of with Lullabies for a Wildcat?
Were just proud and happy to be writing and recording music we love.
What was the most challenging part of bringing this album together?
We didn’t face any real challenges recording the album. It’s very DIY. Having no vocal mic maybe was a challenge?
How did you connect with Ubiquity Records?
After 2 years sat on the record during the Covid lockdowns, we eventually connected with Michael Mcfaddin – the founder of Ubiquity Records – over instagram and he signed the band the day after hearing the album.
Do you have plans to tour with Sons Of Sevilla?
We’ve recently linked up with Space Agency, FMLY & Emerged Agency so we’ll be touring very soon.
Are you into new music perse or would you say your tastes are very much from yesteryears?
Were into old and new music! We are always finding new bands and new tunes that we enjoy. We’re not set on one particular era at all.
What drives you to create the music that you make?
It’s our only ticket outta town..
What has been one of your favorite moments from the past year?
That would have to be being out in Austin TX making our second record with Adrian Quesada back in April.
What is next for Sons Of Sevilla?
We are working on the release of our second album and rehearsing with our live band ready to tour. We’re hoping to be back in the states for March doing the rounds and then heading back into the studio for album number three.
