Can you tell us the story behind the creation of “Sparks Meets”? How did the collaboration with Juan Ortiz and Caliber come about?

The creation of “Sparks Meets” was a spontaneous and serendipitous experience. It all began when I found myself in between hotels in Miami. A friend of mine had just set up a home studio in his penthouse, and I needed a place to crash. This was my first time meeting Juan Ortiz and Caliber, and we were all creating in this new and vibrant environment.

Juan was also staying in the penthouse for a couple of weeks, and we instantly connected as musical brothers. Our shared passion for music created an immediate bond, setting the stage for a powerful collaboration. Caliber joined us shortly after, bringing his incredible talent and unique vocal style to the mix. The chemistry between us was undeniable, and it laid the foundation for what would become “Sparks Meets.”

The press release mentions that the track was conceived in a Miami penthouse during a 3am bender. Can you describe that night and how it influenced the creation of the track?

The track wasn’t birthed in a conventional studio; its genesis is a Miami penthouse, a melting pot of talents and ideas. Conceived during a 3am bender, this track is a nostalgic nod to those late-night studio sessions where the magic happens. For Gifted Fire, Juan Ortiz, and Caliber, the chemistry was instant, and the track practically wrote itself.

That night was truly magical and spontaneous. We were all gathered in the penthouse, a space that was as inspiring as it was unconventional. The energy in the room was electric, and you could feel the creative juices flowing. At 3am, the atmosphere was charged with a unique blend of exhaustion and exhilaration, which pushed us to experiment and explore new sounds.

We started jamming, with Juan laying down some incredible Latin grooves on the bass and percussion, and Caliber freestyling over the beats with his raw and powerful rap vocals. I was working on the synths and arranging the different elements, ensuring that everything flowed seamlessly. The combination of our different backgrounds and styles created a synergy that was pure fire..

The late-night setting allowed us to let go of any inhibitions and just immerse ourselves in the music. It was a time of pure, unfiltered creativity, where ideas flowed freely, and we could fully express ourselves. This 3am bender wasn’t just about making music; it was about capturing the essence of that moment, the spontaneity, and the raw emotion. This night influenced the track by embedding it with a sense of urgency, excitement, and authenticity that you can hear in every beat and melody.

What was it like working with Juan Ortiz and Caliber? How did each of you contribute to the final product?

Working with Caliber was pure fire. He’s one of the most talented top liners I’ve ever collaborated with. His ability to come up with compelling lyrics and melodies on the spot is truly impressive. Caliber’s unique voice and NYC-style rap vocals added a raw, authentic edge to the track, giving it a dynamic and captivating vibe. His energy and creativity were infectious, making every session with him exhilarating and productive.

Working with Juan was pure gold. His passion for music and his engineering expertise made the composition and arrangement process effortless. Juan’s rich background in Latin music brought a unique flavor to the track, especially with his juicy rolling basslines and intricate Latin jungle percussions. His meticulous attention to detail and keen ear for sound quality ensured that every element of the track was polished and perfectly balanced.

The beauty of our collaboration was the ability to bounce ideas off each other and create the best work while we were in the zone. Our chemistry was instant, and we quickly found a rhythm that allowed us to experiment and push creative boundaries. The spontaneous and synergistic nature of our sessions in the Miami penthouse played a crucial role in shaping the final product.

After the initial creation in Miami, we completed the mix and mastering in my studio in NYC. This allowed us to fine-tune the track and ensure that it met our high standards. The combination of Juan’s musical prowess, Caliber’s vocal brilliance, and my production skills resulted in a track that we’re all incredibly proud of.

Can you elaborate on the chemistry you felt with Juan and Caliber? How did that affect the creative process?

Absolutely! The chemistry with Juan and Caliber was instantaneous and incredibly powerful. From the moment we started working together, it was clear that we shared a deep understanding and passion for music. Juan, with his rich background as a Colombian-American musician, brought a unique blend of cultural influences and technical expertise to the table. His ability to seamlessly integrate traditional Latin rhythms with modern electronic beats was truly inspiring.

Caliber, on the other hand, is a Miami-based NYC songwriter with a knack for creating catchy and profound lyrics. His vocal delivery added a raw and authentic energy to the track. The way he approached the lyrics and melodies resonated perfectly with the vibe we were aiming for in “Sparks Meets.”

This strong chemistry allowed us to communicate effortlessly, both musically and personally. We often found ourselves finishing each other’s ideas and building upon each other’s suggestions. It was like a musical conversation where every input was valued and integrated smoothly. The creative process felt natural and fluid, with each session being more productive and exciting than the last.

Our collaboration was marked by spontaneity and openness. For instance, the track was conceived during a late-night session in a Miami penthouse. The relaxed yet focused environment allowed us to experiment and push our creative boundaries without any pressure. We would jam late into the night, capturing the energy and euphoria of those moments in our recordings.

“Sparks Meets” combines Miami rolling bass lines, jungle Latin percussions, NYC-style rap vocals, and flaming horns. How did you decide on these particular elements?

Deciding on the elements for “Sparks Meets” was an organic process that stemmed from our collective influences and a lot of experimentation. We had all the right ingredients and were eager to blend them into something unique and captivating.

Firstly, the rolling bassline is a direct nod to Miami’s vibrant tech house scene and Juan’s Latin influence. Juan’s rich Colombian background brought a fresh perspective to the table. His ability to craft juicy, rhythmic basslines that groove effortlessly with the Latin jungle percussions added a foundational energy to the track. As a percussionist myself, it was exciting to explore and experiment with these new grooves, creating a dynamic interplay of rhythms.

Caliber’s voice naturally fits the NYC-style rap mold. His distinct vocal delivery adds an authentic urban edge to the track, bridging the gap between the bold tech house beats and the intricate Latin rhythms. His MC vibe was perfect for capturing the raw, gritty essence of NYC’s house scene, which we wanted to incorporate.

The inclusion of flaming horns and stabs was a deliberate choice to invoke a sinister atmosphere that complements Caliber’s vocals. These elements add a layer of intensity and drama, enhancing the track’s overall vibe. The horns and stabs provide sharp, punctuated moments that heighten the sense of anticipation and excitement, making the track more engaging and multidimensional.

How do you feel the different musical influences from Miami and NYC came together in this track?

The blend of musical influences from Miami and NYC in “Sparks Meets” is one of the track’s most compelling aspects. Juan’s Colombian roots brought a vibrant and unique flavor to the mix. His ability to create juicy rolling basslines and integrate Latin jungle percussions added a rich, rhythmic depth that is both captivating and dance-inducing. This Latin influence is a core element of the track, giving it an energetic and lively feel.

Personally, I have been heavily inspired by the Miami tech house scene. Frequenting iconic venues like Space and various other events, I became enamored with the bold, pulsating tech house sound that Miami is known for. This influence drove me to incorporate those dynamic, powerful elements into “Sparks Meets.”

I also wanted to fuse this Miami tech house vibe with the NYC house sound, which has its own unique characteristics. NYC house often features rap vocals and a gritty, urban edge. Caliber, with his distinct voice and perfect MC vibe, brought this NYC influence to the track seamlessly. His vocal delivery adds an authentic, raw energy that complements the Latin and tech house elements beautifully.

The fusion of these diverse influences resulted in a track that feels both innovative and familiar. The Latin rhythms and percussion provide a vibrant foundation, the tech house elements bring boldness and drive, and the NYC-inspired rap vocals add a gritty, urban edge. Together, these components create a unique and cohesive sound that captures the essence of both cities while forging something entirely new. “Sparks Meets” is a testament to the magic that happens when different musical styles and cultures come together to create something fresh and exciting.

As the head of your own label, Gifted Fire Records, what are some of the challenges and rewards you’ve experienced?

Running my own label, Gifted Fire Records, has been an incredibly rewarding yet challenging journey.

One of the biggest challenges is time management. Balancing the creative process of making music with the business side of marketing and promoting it can be quite demanding. There are only so many hours in the day, and it often feels like I’m juggling multiple roles at once. Ensuring that each release gets the attention it deserves while still finding time to create new music requires careful planning and prioritization.

Another challenge is the sheer volume of new music being released daily. The music industry is incredibly dynamic, and staying updated with new trends and releases can be overwhelming. However, I try to stay grounded and focus on what fulfills me creatively rather than just chasing market trends. This helps maintain the authenticity and integrity of the music we produce at Gifted Fire Records.

On the flip side, there are immense rewards. One of the most fulfilling aspects is the joy of collaborating with other artists. The exchange of ideas, creative synergy, and mutual respect in the studio often lead to incredible outcomes. Working with talented individuals and seeing a project come to life from a simple idea is deeply satisfying.

Another rewarding aspect is the creative freedom that comes with running my own label. I enjoy starting with a blank canvas and allowing the music to evolve organically. This process of discovery through creativity is fascinating and keeps the work exciting and fulfilling. It’s not just about the end product but the journey of creating something unique and meaningful.

How does running your own label influence your approach to creating and releasing music?

Running my own label, Gifted Fire Records, has profoundly influenced my approach to creating and releasing music, offering both freedom and a unique sense of sovereignty.

One of the greatest benefits is the unparalleled creative freedom it provides. I have complete control over every aspect of the music production process, from selecting the artists I collaborate with to the style and genre of the music we create. This freedom extends to the release schedule as well. I can choose the release dates of tracks, allowing for a much faster turnaround than if I were working with other labels. This agility helps keep the momentum and energy of the project alive.

As an independent artist, I strive for full creative control over my work. This means overseeing every detail from production to mixing, mastering, artwork, and ultimately the release. The label acts as an additional instrument in my toolkit, ensuring that the creative vision is shared exactly as intended. This control allows for a cohesive and authentic representation of my artistry, unfiltered by external influences.

One of my favorite aspects of running Gifted Fire Records is the opportunity to work with undiscovered talent. Whether it’s musicians, singers, producers, or individuals new to the electronic music genre, I love bringing fresh voices into my world of creation and production. My aim is to inspire and facilitate their journey, helping them finish their first record or achieve their goal of completing a track. This mentorship and collaboration are incredibly rewarding and add a rich, diverse element to the label’s output.

Your press release mentions that “Sparks Meets” practically wrote itself. Can you dive deeper into what that creative flow felt like?

The creative flow for “Sparks Meets” was truly magical and almost effortless. From the moment we started working together, everything just clicked. There was an immediate chemistry between Juan, Caliber, and me that made the whole process feel natural and fluid. It was one of those rare instances where the music seemed to flow through us rather than being something we had to force or meticulously craft.

We were in a Miami penthouse, a space filled with energy and inspiration. The environment played a crucial role in setting the mood for our late-night sessions. We began jamming around 3am, a time when there are no distractions, and you can fully immerse yourself in the creative process. The atmosphere was relaxed yet charged with excitement, allowing us to experiment freely without any pressure.

Juan and I started laying down the groove together, with him bringing some incredible Latin rhythms on the bass and percussion. This immediately set a vibrant and rhythmic foundation for the track. His rich Colombian influences brought a unique flavor that was both captivating and dance-inducing. As a percussionist myself, it was exciting to explore and build upon these grooves, creating a dynamic interplay of rhythms.

Caliber’s vocal delivery was the perfect addition to this foundation. His ability to craft catchy and profound lyrics on the spot added a raw and authentic energy to the track. His NYC-style rap vocals seamlessly bridged the bold tech house beats and intricate Latin rhythms, enhancing the overall vibe of the track.

Throughout the session, ideas flowed effortlessly. We found ourselves finishing each other’s thoughts and building on each other’s suggestions with ease. It was like a musical conversation where every input was valued and integrated smoothly. The spontaneous nature of our collaboration allowed us to capture the energy and euphoria of those moments in our recordings.

By the time the sun began to rise, we had a track that felt complete and cohesive. “Sparks Meets” is a true reflection of that magical night—an embodiment of the spontaneous creativity and synergy that we experienced. The track practically wrote itself because we were all deeply in tune with each other and the music we were creating. It was a rare and exhilarating experience that resulted in a dynamic and captivating track.

Do you have a particular process or routine when you start working on a new track?

Absolutely, I do have a particular process when starting on a new track, and it all begins with my background as a drummer and percussionist. Groove is central to my music, so I typically start with the bass and drums. These elements are foundational and set the tone for the entire track. They help define the style and genre, serving as the “meat” of the track for me.

Once I have a solid groove, I move on to layering chords and melodies. This part is akin to painting on a musical canvas, where the choice of chords and instruments creates the color palette and timbre of the track. I usually complete this initial sketch within the first two hours. It’s a rapid, intuitive process that captures the core idea of the track.

If I’m collaborating with a singer or instrumentalist, they are often present during this initial phase. Watching the track come together helps them write their parts, whether it’s a riff, lead melody, or lyrics. This collaborative atmosphere can be incredibly inspiring and productive.

After the basic structure is in place, it’s time for tracking vocals or lead instruments and adding overdubs. At this point, I usually take a short break to refresh my ears before diving into the arrangement phase. This involves deciding which elements come in at which points and fine-tuning samples, particularly drum samples and synth patches, to fit the track’s nature.

The final stage is like icing on the cake—adding fills, effects, and atmospheric elements. I do this once the track’s structure is laid out. I find it helpful to sleep on it and come back with fresh ears for a mixdown and then mastering the following day. This entire process is typically wrapped up within five days, ensuring the track retains its initial energy and spontaneity.

Describe the setup of the penthouse studio where “Sparks Meets” was created. What essential gear or software did you use?

I definitely got lucky with the penthouse studio setup for creating “Sparks Meets.” Manny, the owner of the penthouse, had just purchased a pair of Barefoot Footprint 02 monitors, and it was my first time hearing them in action. The clarity, depth of field, and frequency range of these monitors, all without the need for a subwoofer, absolutely blew me away. I was so impressed that I ended up buying my own set the following month. They’re some of the best monitor speakers I’ve ever used.

For my own setup, I usually travel with my trusty Nord Lead 4 and my laptop, which is configured with Ableton Live. I’ve got my Gifted Fire presets, including drum racks, sample packs, and go-to plugins like Diva, Serum, and Omnisphere. My Universal Audio Apollo x4 is a cornerstone for both live performances and recording sessions. The quality and versatility it offers are indispensable. Additionally, I can’t live without my Culture Vulture and 1176 compressor; they are essential tools in my mixing and mastering process.

Having a good set of monitor speakers and a properly set up room is crucial for me. Once those elements are in place, it’s just a matter of plugging in and getting to work. The penthouse had the perfect environment for creativity and collaboration, allowing us to fully dive into the production process without any constraints.

How does your studio environment affect your music production?

I’m deeply inspired by the environment I’m in, and it plays a significant role in my music production. Every city has its own unique sound, which I absorb almost subconsciously. By going out to events and paying attention to what’s playing at local restaurants and venues, I get a good sense of the city’s vibe and rhythm.

The view from the studio also has a profound impact on my creativity. In Miami, for instance, the beautiful sunrise overlooking the water was incredibly inspiring. It was the perfect backdrop to recharge and fuel my creative energy. There’s something about being surrounded by such natural beauty that brings a fresh perspective and invigorates the creative process.

Most importantly, it’s the artists in the city that truly inspire me. Having access to a diverse range of local talent with their own unique backstories and signature sounds is incredibly motivating. Each artist I collaborate with brings something special to the table, and my role is to absorb their influences and create something new together, infusing it with that Gifted Fire touch.

The studio environment, whether it’s the view, the local sounds, or the talented artists around me, profoundly shapes the music I create. It allows me to draw from a rich tapestry of influences and transform them into tracks that resonate with both the local scene and a broader audience.

“Sparks Meets” is noted as your first tech house banger. What drew you to explore this genre, and how do you see it fitting into your overall musical style?

“Sparks Meets” represents my first foray into the tech house genre, and the journey to creating this track was both organic and inspired by my experiences in Miami. The vibrant tech house scene in Miami, with its infectious energy and rolling basslines, naturally drew me in. Being immersed in that environment, it was only a matter of time before those influences began to shape my own musical output.

I had the perfect ingredients to cook up something special. Juan brought those rich Latin grooves that add a unique flavor to the track, while Caliber’s signature voice provided the perfect MC vibe that we needed. Their contributions made “Sparks Meets” an organic creation, blending our diverse influences seamlessly. It was like having the right spices in the perfect setting to cook up this tech house banger.

For me, music creation is a reaction to my environment and an evolutionary process of expressing what I feel inside. It’s about the fusion of internal emotions and external influences. Exploring tech house felt like a natural progression in my musical journey. It allowed me to express a different facet of my artistic identity while staying true to my core style of blending various genres and cultural influences.

“Sparks Meets” fits into my overall musical style by continuing to push boundaries and explore new territories. While it’s my first tech house track, it still carries the essence of my sound—innovative, diverse, and deeply influenced by the environment and the people around me. This exploration into tech house has not only expanded my musical repertoire but also opened new avenues for creative expression and collaboration.

Are there other genres or styles you’re interested in exploring in the future?

Yes, absolutely! I’ve just wrapped up a beautiful album in collaboration with the group Kwangis Alternatribu, made in the Philippines. This project is my attempt at discovering and creating Asian house music, which incorporates traditional instruments from Southeast Asia. The album, titled “Kalibutan,” focuses on Philippine instruments such as the kulitang, gangsa, kubin, and guyup, all built on traditional rhythms.

This fusion of collaboration has resulted in tracks that span a variety of genres, including deep house, organic house, indie dance, and progressive house. By blending these traditional sounds with modern electronic music, we’ve created something truly unique that honors the cultural heritage of the Philippines while pushing the boundaries of house music.

Exploring these different styles has been incredibly fulfilling, and it’s opened my eyes to the vast potential of incorporating traditional instruments into contemporary genres. Moving forward, I’m excited to continue this journey of musical exploration, always looking for new ways to innovate and bring fresh sounds to my audience. Whether it’s diving deeper into the roots of Asian house or experimenting with entirely new genres, I’m always eager to expand my musical horizons.

How do the nightlife and culture of Miami influence your music?

The nightlife and culture of Miami have a profound influence on my music. Miami is renowned for its vibrant tech house scene, characterized by higher BPMs and strong Latin influences. The energy at some of the best parties in the world, hosted in iconic venues like Space, is absolutely infectious. Being immersed in that environment naturally drives me to incorporate those dynamic, rolling basslines and Latin jungle percussions into my tracks.

The weather and scenery of Miami also play a significant role in inspiring my creativity. The beautiful sunrises over the water and the general ambiance of the city provide a perfect backdrop for musical exploration. There’s something about the tropical climate and the lively atmosphere that makes me want to create fresh, invigorating sounds.

Miami’s culture is a melting pot of diverse influences, which is reflected in the music. The fusion of different sounds, rhythms, and styles that you encounter in the city has pushed me to experiment and blend various genres in my work. This multicultural aspect of Miami enriches my music, making it more vibrant and eclectic.

Personally, I find that creativity and business go hand in hand, much like the integration between the left and right brain. This balance creates a holistic approach to my work, and it’s something I constantly strive for. Managing both aspects allows me to maintain artistic integrity while ensuring that my music reaches a wider audience effectively.

There are always learning curves and obstacles on both sides. On the creative front, it’s about staying inspired and continually evolving my sound. On the business side, it’s about understanding market trends, effective promotion, and managing logistics. Dedication to my craft is crucial. It drives me to continuously learn and master the technical and creative aspects of music production. This dedication fuels my passion and ensures that I keep creating, regardless of the hurdles life throws my way.

Being open to new experiences and collaborations is another key element. It allows me to learn from diverse perspectives and create music that is rich and meaningful. This openness also extends to the business side, where networking and staying updated with industry trends are essential.

Persistence is equally important. The music industry can be tough, but maintaining a relentless drive to push forward makes everything more meaningful and rewarding. Whether it’s a creative block or a business challenge, persistence helps me overcome obstacles and continue moving towards my goals.
