Contributing WriterHard techno titan Perc steps up with a thrilling remix
Sinistermind is a Colombian artist and label associate who was last here with a remix in August 2024. He mixes up techno and electro with evocative mental imagery and rich, textural grooves. He has done so on the likes of TNR MEDIA and PRTL WAX and often produces live, on an array of hardware, which is what lends his music such a direct and visceral feel. He is also the founder of TNR Media Records, a label and agency in Colombia, as well as one of the founders of Relink Data, a renowned streaming studio and bar space in Mexico City.
The opener, ‘Medizin’ features label founder and techno mainstay Lady Tazz. Her sensual coos and intimate mutterings add an erotic edge to the muscular drums as distant pads bring an air of unease to this late-night seducer.
Remixer Perc is a seasoned UK artist who heads up Perc Trax and has been a standout champion of hard techno for over 20 years. His version is harder edged and in your face, with big drums, urgent percussive loops and the vocals turned into menacing stabs designed to invigorate the dance floor.
The lithe and otherworldly ‘Viperade’ is built on rubbery, robust drums and bass, with twitchy synths peeling off in an eerie fashion as swirling pads are like eyes surveilling your every move. It’s delicious, deep and driving but heady, then ‘Drones’ heads into subterranean realms. It sketches out an underwater cavern with water dripping from the roof and unrelenting dubby drums rolling onwards into a spooky unknown. ‘Rising Souls’ rounds out with chunky drum funk and icy hi-hats as dark string sounds linger in the air above to bring a shadowy soul.
