Deep in the heart of San Francisco’s electronic scene, a story of transformation is unfolding. The Indiigo Child (Daniel Knott) drew the curtains on “Know The Feeling,” a melodic house sizzler that began its life in the depths of a lucid dream. “I had a dream of playing music in a warehouse full of ravers,” Knott recalls. “The song that I was playing to the crowd was repetitive in my head when I woke up. I voice noted the melody and created the track as close as possible to my dream.”
This marriage of dreamscape and dancefloor defines The Indiigo Child‘s latest chapter. Since emerging in 2018 with his “Renegade Voyager EP,” Knott has been steadily expanding his sonic palette, from his emotive 2021 collaboration with Luma on “I’m Yours” to 2022’s “Say It’s Alright” featuring Lynett Nayade. Now, “Know The Feeling” marks his first offering of 2024, introducing a darker, more energetic phase in his evolving artistry.
Your creative process seems quite unique. Is there a specific way you start to make every song, or does each one differ?
Every song has its own journey and process. Typically, I start with a melody, which is usually derived from some sort of inspiration or dream. I can honestly say that every song feels like a brand-new production experience. New techniques and production tricks are learned during every new track, typically, due to the unique aspect of every song. During the production phase, I try to be free-flowing and non-restrictive with my creativity, and during the mixing/editing, I tend to be more technical and polished. Together, I usually have a better result.
What sparked your initial interest in producing and DJing?
At an early age, I was immersed into a creative family, and that really served as the initial inspiration for producing music, however, one of the first producers that really caught my attention as a kid was Prince, specifically, Purple Rain. Although I missed the 90’s rave era, I was able to go back and tap into some of the classics. The first album I ever purchased was Tiesto’s Nyana album, and I used to listen to it on repeat. Trance music inspired me to want to DJ.
What’s on your personal playlist these days?
I love this question, and nowadays, due to me creating soo much electronic music, on my own personal time I listen to a lot of chill/retro wave music. Either that, or frequency music. My ears tend to be fatigued, and I like to listen to overall smooth music, on my personal time.
Who are your biggest musical influences and how do they shape your sound?
Currently, it’s usually non music influences that are channeled into my music, such as experiencing life, and all the challenges and beauty it has to offer. Early on it was mostly 80’s electronic music such as Duran Duran and Depeche Mode.
“Know The Feeling” seems to herald a new era for The Indiigo Child. What can we expect in the near future?
I’m really excited for this new phase, I have spent the last year creating music non stop, and I have such a variety of songs to share with the world. This year I will be releasing at least over 20 songs, and right after I will start focusing on shows, which will provide a unique opportunity to connect with listeners on a deeper level.
Looking further ahead, what are your long-term goals for this project?
Know the Feeling, is just a warm up and preview of all the music I’m about to release. It’s going to be high energy, with a lot of emotion and feelings. I think the world is going to appreciate all the new sounds, and they truly were made from a genuine and authentic place. 5 Years from now, I will be traveling and connecting with listeners during my live shows, and making everlasting connections. More importantly, I want to help other artists and establish a solid foundation to help other humans achieve their dreams. We are all connected, and it’s important for me to press forward with the intention of helping others, as I proceed through my own journey in life.
