Following his breakout hit, ‘Yumi’, on Diynamic in 2023, frenchman Notre Dame experienced a newfound notoriety which led to global performances in cities such as London, Tokyo and Miami. We caught up with Notre Dame as he returns to Diynamic to continue an impressive run

Notre Dame! Thanks for chatting to Music Is 4 Lovers. How’s your summer going so far?

Thank you for having me! My summer has been incredible so far. I’ve been fortunate to travel to some amazing places and play at some fantastic festivals and clubs around the world. The energy from the crowds has been super cool, and it’s been inspiring to see how my music resonates with people from different cultures and backgrounds.

This month, you’re returning to Diynamic with a brand new four-track EP, ‘Citizen 99’. Could you give us a deep dive into this record?

‘Citizen 99’ is a project I’m really proud of. Each track on the EP has its own unique vibe and story. ‘Soda’, is a blend of bright and melancholic tones with catchy piano chords, perfect for closing out an outdoor festival with a sense of optimism. ‘FE3L’ takes inspiration from the 80s, featuring electronic percussion and robotic vocals, creating a narrative of a computer gaining consciousness and being chased by forces trying to shut it down. The title track, ‘Citizen 99’, mixes celestial elements like bells and choirs with gritty Atlanta rap-style vocals, resulting in a high-energy dance floor hybrid. Lastly, ‘Love 404’ combines elements of witch-house with auto-tuned, crushed vocals, making it a beautifully hypnotic track designed to make dancers lose themselves in the music.

An eclectic selection of house cuts on ‘Citizen 99’! What was the production process like?

The production process was both challenging and rewarding. I wanted to push my boundaries and explore new sounds while maintaining the essence of my music. I spent a lot of time experimenting with different instruments, vocal effects, and production techniques to create a unique soundscape for each track. The process involved late nights in the studio, reworking elements until they felt just right, and drawing inspiration from various genres and experiences I encountered while touring.

In 2023 your debut release, ‘Yumi’, became a standout hit; what impact did it have on your career?

‘Yumi’ was a game-changer for me. It opened up so many doors and allowed me to reach a wider audience. It led to opportunities to collaborate with other artists, perform at major festivals and clubs around the world, and sign with renowned labels.

We’d love to know more about your background and what influences your music

I come from a diverse musical background, having been exposed to various genres from a young age. Growing up in France, I was influenced by everything from classical music to electronic dance music. As a teenager, I became fascinated with house music and started experimenting with production. My influences are eclectic and I also draw inspiration from my travels and the different cultures I experience along the way.

What’s your favourite record right now and why?

Right now, I’m really enjoying “End of Beginning” by Djo. It’s an incredible record that blends a variety of genres and influences into something truly unique. The songwriting is top-notch, and the production is both innovative and nostalgic, capturing a mix of modern sounds with a hint of retro vibes. Each track on the album feels like a journey, with intricate layers and emotional depth that make you want to listen to it over and over. It’s the kind of record that inspires me to push my own creative boundaries.

Do you have any other projects planned for the rest of 2024?

I have a few exciting projects in the pipeline. I’m working on another EP, which I hope to release later this year, and I’ve got some collaborations with other artists that I’m really excited about. I’m also exploring the idea of a concept album that ties together anime art and music. 2024 is shaping up to be a busy and creative year!
