What can possibly unite Los Angeles – a global megapolis of nearly perpetual summer – and Murmansk – a Russian city that’s two degrees NORTH of the Arctic Circle? The long answer is: a love for warm, deep, analogue dance music that transcends geography and doesn’t care for boundaries. The short answer: Meeshoo. Based in the Russian Far North but influenced by strains of House music emanating from Chicago, New York, Paris and California, Mikhail Maksimov aka Meeshoo is charting an unlikely and inspiring path.

This vintage synth obsessive had his start on vinyl-only European labels, like the hugely respected Serialisme. After adopting the Meeshoo alias 3 years ago, Maksimov has already made a mark with releases on New York’s King Street/Nite Grooves and San Francisco’s Salted imprints. In 2017 Meeshoo made the Culprit debut with a groove-laden “Warm Inside,” included on the LA label’s latest “Above the City” compilation. With “Somebody Else” he is making a leap into the full release territory.

Meeshoo’s upbeat grooves are Culprit’s perfect segue to summer. From the bassline and electric organ-driven “Magnetic,” to the deep swing of “Someone,” and bright textures of “Bhutan,” this EP entices you to a dancefloor under the sun. It’s a balanced, cohesive work from the Russian producer, reminiscent of some of the label’s best Modern Deep House releases from the likes of Shonky, Lee Foss, Inxec & Matt Tolfrey. In other words – this Murmansk native fits right in!

Remix comes from one of Culprit’s main recent contributors Maurice Uzzan aka Whitesquare. Rome-based artist has been behind two EPs and a remix over the last two years and continues his great form for the label with his deep tribal take on “Someone.”
