With The BPM Festival on the horizon, we thought we’d bring in an artist based in Playa del Carmen for our 167th Lovecast episode, Akbal Music artist, Muan.

Muan has been shaping his career nicely in recent years. As an A&R and producer for Akbal Music, Muan has harnessed a knack for what sounds stand out amongst the crowd. These skills translate to his music production and DJ sets as well. Muan has released his superb tracks on Supernature, No.19 Music, Get Physical, and of course, Akbal Music.

If you’re in Playa this New Years you can catch Muan playing Flying Circus at Canibal Royale alongside Audiofly and Blond:ish, or at Akbal Music’s 10th year anniversary party at BPM featuring Robbie Akbal, Igor Vicente, Miguel Puente, and Gab Rhome at La Santanera on Sat Jan 7th.

In meantime check his latest mix and learn more about Muan in the interview below. Enjoy!

Interview with Muan

How did you first get introduced to underground dance music? What is the most challenging part of becoming a touring artist?
I first got introduced to this underground music in Playa del Carmen in an old club called Espiral. Playa was very small a lot of djs came there more than 20 years ago English, German etc. Dj T played there once.

I think the biggest challenge is to stay relevant by releasing your music. I personally have had this challenge with releases here and there but haven’t been as constant as needed probably.

What has been the most exciting turning point of your career so far?
My first releases for Akbal Music. Supernature Recordings, No. 19 Music & Get Physical Music were surely it. They all happened around the same time.

Where is your home base? If someone were visiting there for the first time, what clubs and/or parties and/or restaurants would they want to check out?
My home base is Playa del Carmen the place a lot of people use as their vacation retreat. If there is one club I would have to recommend its La Santanera its been my home for 7 years and its one of the best places to go out and enjoy a good night,.

For restaurants I do have a good list its full of good food in here. Some of my favorites would have to be Canibal Royal a nice Beach Club restaurant and Almirante Pech.

What advice would you give to an aspiring producer?
If there is anything I could say to someone it’s to trust your taste and be original. Many new producers try to sound like someone else.

What’s on the horizon for Muan the remainder in 2017?
We Start 2017 with the right foot at BPM festival with the 10 years anniversary of both the festival and Akbal Music label I am proud to be part of from the beginning. The rest of the year still being cooked but surely some nice things will pop up. Regarding my music I have been working in a lot of stuff recently I want some of my tracks with my solo project to see the light soon I will keep you guys posted for sure.

Do you have any hobbies outside of music?
I love travelling that is one of my favorites specially outside of Dj Gig related travels. I have also recently started liking photography a lot, got myself a really nice camera and been playing around with it its pretty amazing.

What are some touristy things you do in your off-time while touring?
It really depends where you are travelling to. But I would say iconic places of the cities I visit are always a must. Go to visit restaurants that have been recommended and if the place is by the ocean always go to the Beach for a Beer.

Dream gig…
Fusion Festival Germany

Name one of your go-to tracks…
Hard to pick one but recently Dance Spirit have been some of my favorite artists I love their new tune in Rebellion “Numbers don’t Lie”

Tell us about your mix…
When I make a podcast I like taking the listener through a nice listening path nothing too heavy. In this mix keeping things mostly housey I combined some old and new tunes from different artists I am digging at the moment

Drink of choice…
Mezcal & Beer

CHEERS!
