Interview with James Dexter

How did you first get introduced to underground dance music?
I was DJing from quite early on, I as about 14/15 when i got my first set of decks. For a good few years i was playing Garage & Drum and Bass records. It wasn’t until i was 18/19 that i moved more over to underground house after going to venues like Turnmills and Fabric.

What is the most challenging part of becoming a full-time producer and touring artist?
I guess like any self employment work, the biggest challenge of all is building your brand up enough to be able to secure constant work and to keep yourself going. Staying consistent is key for me.

What has been the most exciting turning point of your career so far?
Its hard for me to pick one thing, I would say there’s nothing more exciting than seeing or hearing the top tier guys playing your music out, walking into a club room and hearing one of your own tunes is still a surreal experience for me but it’s also a great moment to confirm what you’re doing is working and gives you a nice push to keep going.

Also when artist’s that you respect and look up to like Steve Bug get it touch and ask you for unsigned music, thats gotta be a good turning point right…?

What advice would you give to an aspiring producer?
You have to stick with it and keep plugging away.

What’s on the horizon for James Dexter in 2017?
This year is a busy one, I’ve got a lot of releases coming up over the next few months on my own label Inermu, as well as Crosstown Rebel’s Rebellion imprint, Cyclic Records, Bondage Music and a few others. Keep your eyes and ears out for the first Inermu VA dropping this summer.

Gig wise….i’ve got some great gigs lined up in the coming weeks in Berlin, Ibiza, Argentina, Majorca and of corse home town London.

Do you have any hobbies outside of music?
Not right now to be honest, I’m pretty much in the studio 24/7. I run every morning….if that counts as a hobby?

What are some touristy things you do while playing in a foreign city?
Usually there isn’t much time to do any touristy stuff when playing gigs abroad, but I always like to try get about as much as possible and see the local cites and sample the local beers 😉

Dream gig…
Circoloco DC10

Name one of your go-to tracks…
Alex Celler, Anthea – The Playmaker (Dyed Soundorom)
