Hey Goeran, how are you, how has summer been?

Thank you for joining me here today and for giving me the opportunity to talk about music on your blog. I’m doing very well at the moment. Lots of sports and a week’s vacation at the North Sea have cleared my head and provided new creative input. In addition, the summer brings us many great days with the opportunity to visit concerts and open air events again. That makes us happy. You notice how people have been missing the opportunity to consume music together for the last few years. I have used the time creatively and spent a lot in the studio working on new music. This resulted in new releases for MYR and also some other great projects.

What do you make of the state of the world right now? Do you tune into news about global finances and russian invasions or do you try to ignore it?

It is a weird situation now and our life is strongly affected by so many things. I think that our world as we knew it for the last years is going to change very fast and strongly in the coming years. I don’t follow the news on TV or the media on various platforms. War is something cruel that cannot be described in words and it makes me very sad. Love, Peace, and Freedom always prevail! Please stop this madness.

You have been busy this year with three new releases – are you in a purple patch creatively and why is that?

Music is a passion that comes from my heart. Making music is natural for me. Many things apart from music give me pleasure every day. It’s important to be active and do sports outside of the studio to clear my head for creative work. It’s nice to see how sounds connect people and bring them together. For me, the process of letting new tracks come to life, to mix and master them is a very exciting thing – working with complexity based on experiences I collected for years. Especially in the studio this development never stops and it’s just fun. That’s the fascination of music!

As an independent label, we have the luck and freedom to decide ourselves about the completion of the works and the planning of the releases. With all 27 releases that have appeared on MYR since 2016, there has never been a feeling of stress or hecticness because of this. When something feels rounded and right, we get on with the planning, which takes the time pressure out and leaves room for creativity. All the colleagues we have worked with so far appreciate this approach.

Personally, I think this is how creative art with soul and attention to detail is created.

What is your process like? Where do you start on a tune?

During the last 20 years my set up modified over and over again. I bought new instruments and I sold equipment depending on learning secrets of producing music. Currently I am satisfied with my setup.

It combines digital and analog elements. Every tool has its own character and special features. When I remember producing about ten years ago it was an unplanned trial and error process. Now I am thinking more about arranging with a strong love in details.

My studio is a mixture of analog synthesizers, hardware devices and various digital plugins that I combine with Ableton Live. For the optimal sound, my studio monitors are tuned and adapted to the room. All my equipment is available on the fly at my desk and invites to spontaneous jamming and recording. So I have no fixed starting point for a new project.

A 32 channel converter gives me the option to connect my analog gear and loop as individual tracks from Ableton Live. My mixdown runs from the beginning of a production into an analog tube summing mixer unit and are bundled to a 2 channel stereo sum. After summing the sound goes into a selfmade EQ from Steffen Müller Custom Audio Germany. With the EQ the mono and stereo sum can be processed. After EQ, the signal goes into the SSL Fusion to add width and warmth. Then the sound goes back into Ableton for recording.
When processing the individual tracks, 500 EQ´s devices from Elysia and Ocean Audio by Malcom Toft are also used, as well as effects devices from Strymon.

What inspired the latest one “Could Not Exist”?

After a few days in the studio, the individual phrases have fit perfectly into the sound. I really liked the vocal track when I listened to it, so it ended up keeping its place in the mix. On both versions the original and the remix by Hanna Haïs the vocals add a focused and driving aspect to the sounds and groove. So far we have received a lot of positive feedback on the release and especially on the versions with the vocals.

How did you select the remixes, what made Hanna Hais right?

The main focus on our new release “Could Not Exist” which comes up in August with a great remix by Parisian Hanna Haïs was to create a percussive rolling sound and deep grooves that still have lightness and a certain melancholy. In 2020, Hanna’s Mandala EP reached me as a promotion. Her percussive tracks caught me and I like to play her music in my sets. We got in touch via social media and she spontaneously felt like supporting our label podcast series “MYR invites friends to play” with a DJ set. Since then we were in regular contact and at some point we started working together on an EP.

Her driving darker remix perfectly rounds out the original and instrumental version of “Could Not Exist”. Hanna’s approach to the realization of the files and the elaboration of the arrangement make the remix a danceable all-rounder in warm ups and primetime DJ sets.

You also run the MYR label – what do you look for when signing a new demo?

Looking back to 2016 when I started my independent label MYR and the upcoming 27th release I am proud that I took this step. At MYR we don’t care about the pressure of time.

The key is that a release feels perfectly complete and matches the label and its philosophy. We wait until a project feels right and ready to be released. The style of the project MYR is characterized by electronic music of all kinds. We also have some ambient pieces among our tracks but between deep – tech – minimal – techno and house there things feel right!

For us the easiest and fastest way to contact us is via Demobox on our homepage. But also a private soundcloud or wetransfer link by mail is great. Put the demo tracks there, add info about the artist and send the whole thing via the social media channels.

What else have you got coming up?

It remains exciting. Until the end of the year, every fourth Tuesday of the month from 18-19 my radio show “Save Me From The Unknown” will be played on IBIZA Club News Radio. There will also be monthly DJ sets on my SoundCloud channel.
There are two more releases planned for this year on MYR: In September the single “Hypnotise” from Bali DJ and producer Scotty Cal and for the end of the year my release “Mirror of Speaking”.

In addition, I will finish two more albums with production music.

Along the way I’m working on mastering and mixing jobs that reach me via social media and the MYR homepage.

Our label artists Juli Lee, Oldrich Sic Jr. and Kaiser Waldon are represented at various parties and are currently playing again in clubs and at festivals.

You can find a contact for MYR, more info about our label and our work at: www.goeranmeyer.com.

Take care of yourselves.

What was the last piece of music you heard that blew you away?

Röyksopp – How The Flowers Grow ft. Pixx (Rodriguez Jr. Remix)

This tune is absolutely amazing. Mixdown is perfect and the quality of vocals and synthlines fits perfect together.
