Interview with Mau Maioli
How did you get into dance music and DJing? Do you remember a specific moment of inspiration or was it an evolution?
I started with school events and already became interested in the art of mixing and transmit energy through the music to the people.
How does your residency at Muinho help your DJ career progress?
My residency is a great importance to me. That’s where I feel at home, where I can explore the best tracks to and test new sounds for my label Beat On Me.
What’s the scene like in Farroupilha? How is it unique compared to the rest of the world?
The scene in Farroupilha is old, however, there is one club, Muinho, which is rooted and has many parties. There are well-known parties that come through town and give visibility to the city and the region. People are quite connected to electronic music and we are going through a crop of partygoers. Regarding the rest of the world, I can say that in many places there is a lack of respect for the art DJing, but not in Farroupilha.
What’s the behind your label Beat On Me? What exciting things are on the horizon?
Beat On Me came from an idea at Muinho Farroupilha. Along with my friend Cris d, the project started as a party brand for the club to strengthen the scene in the city. Beat On Me will celebrate it’s one year anniversary in May. We have had many DJs that we are proud of: Fran Bortolossi, Pimpo Gama, Drunky Daniels, DJs here in our state that much represent the local scene. For our one year anniversary we will bring a resident from Warung Beach Club and an artist who has released several tracks by Steyoyoke.
Name a couple core values you hold as a DJ?
I try to show the culture that I live to as many people as possible. I think it’s essential to study the music and pass that knowledge onto the public.
Which way do you lean towards — 115 or 125? What’s one of your favorite jams you’re playing out at the moment?
125. I like that, it excites me. I’ve been listening to a lot of afro house, which has awakened my curiosity, but I’ve been delving into techno and hard techno. My favorite track at the moment is “Aril Brikha, Sebastian Mullaert – Illuminate (Original Mix) [Mule Musiq]”
What gig do you dream about?
D-Edge in São Paulo
What cool things do you have planned for 2016?
I am finalizing an EP with 4 tracks that I hope to sign this year. These are songs that have made me very proud and I look forward to this moment.
Tell us about your mix…
My set contains a lot of what I’ve been playing out at my last gigs. 2016 has been a special year from the beginning, because I’ve found a lot of music, artists, and different labels that I have really liked a lot. I am happy to convey my taste elsewhere.
