Interview with Julsdls

How did you get into dance music and DJing? Do you remember a specific moment of inspiration or was it an evolution?
I’ve always loved music of all kinds, but the first time I got in touch with electronic music was with Benny Bennassi – “Satisfaction”. The journey to discover my groove started there, not just as a DJ but as a producer as well.

What’s the scene like in Dominican Republic? How is it unique compared to the rest of the world?
The scene in Dominican Republic is very beautiful. Everybody knows each other and everybody takes care of one another. It doesn’t matter skin color, sexuality, if you are ugly or cute, we are all the same. All that matters is having a good time united as one family no matter if you are rich or poor, we are there for one thing, MUSIC!

Name a couple core values you hold as a DJ?
A core value that I hold is always get to a gig on time — at least 1 or 2 hours before. That way I can see the path that the event is taking musically. Something I always say is, “if it sounds good, use it” there’s no need to follow a pattern, it is all about the music and how the people dance it.

Which way do you lean towards — 115 or 125 BPM? What’s one of your favorite jams you’re playing out at the moment?
I started at 125-128 then I went all the way down to 115 – 120; currently I am between 120 – 123 (the real groove is here).

What gig do you dream about?
I’d love to play on the beach at the BPM Festival, sunset time or sunrise time, there is more harmony and energy around that time.

What cool things do you have planned for 2016?
For this year i am working more on music production then DJing, but I also have a duo project with a good friend of mine. The name of this duo is So Yumm — this project started out of nowhere! We had a random day to play and the name of the party was So Yumm, all night long me and Dr. Funk playing back to back, then someone wanted to have us open for Solomun, here we decided to make it official. I just gave you guys a short introduction of this duo but yes yummy things are coming this year.

Tell us about your mix…
Jungle Galactic Funk is the way I like to describe this mix because of its conventions of funky bass lines, percussions and synths, ups and downs. I always try to tell a story in my mixes but I also like that the people who listen to it, create their own story with what I make for them.

Drink of choice…
VODKA TONIC
